PCM and volt meter reading???

I hope this is the correct place for this. I have been noticing that my volt meters (I have an aftermarket one in addition to the one on the dash) both have been reading rather low voltage during driving. So last night I checked the battery with the key off and got 12+ (hard to tell exact since my meter doesn't have decimal points on the readout). Then this morning I checked
the battery with the car running and it read 15 volts and when I checked at the back of the alternator I got the same reading. How can there be this much difference between the guages and the alternator reading??? Where does the guage on the dash get it's input??

Thanks

What were the dash and aux voltmeters reading when you found 15 V at the back of the alternator?

Both of my guages we about the same. Somewhere between 11 and 12. In fact I hardly ever see them over 12. Yet when I check the alternator it is always putting out at least 13 or more!
