pcm tune or b&m kits

if i dont plan on going beyond 400rwhp at any point and im pushing somewhere around 250rwhp now would a b&m shift kit or electronic shift controller from them be worth it or should i go with a full pcm tune for my shift points in my 4l60e???

i currently have a jet chip which i've learned is a useless 200$+ item

i would really like the b&m shift controller cuz i could put it back to stock when im just cruising and then kick into performance mode when i wanna romp on it.. but i know better than jumping into something without consulting you guys

Re: pcm tune or b&m kits

Transgo is the only readily available 4L60E shift kit I would consider and is what most of the good 4L60E rebuilders use.

The electronic shift plus is a $.50 resistor and a BAD thing as it makes the shift more harsh all the time when engaged. If you have it handled with a Transgo or in the pcm it can still be mild at low throttle and get firmer when you are deeper into the pedal.

B&M MIGHT have decent products for a TH350 or TH400 but the only 4L60E part I might consider from them would be a deep pan if they make one or a universal tranny cooler.

thanks for you input, i heard the opposite though. from my understanding the transgo kit is a constant beat on your tranny as the controller is only hard on the tranny when engaged??? so im getting confused

Re: pcm tune or b&m kits

You may want to think about installing the Firebird TA performance switch in your Z. It will give you a separate set of performance tables for Shift point MPH, Shift time, Line pressure and Torque converter lockup. All are set using MPH, gear and TPS position, lots of options. The momentary switch activates/deactivates the performance tables in the tune, indicator shows if perf mode is active. At startup engine defaults to Normal tables until switch is depressed , depressing switch again deactivates performance tables. You may want get a laptop, ALDL cable and TunerCat or TunerPro software. That way you can constantly tweak the settings till you are happy. Here is link to switch.. Adding %u201CTransmission Perform%u201D Selector to your LT1%u2019s Automatic Transmission

Here is a pic of my setup.. Momentary switch goes between Ground and PCM pin C13, indicator between +12V IGN voltage and PCM pin A15. I tapped into the connector referenced in URL behind the right side kick panel under glove box rather than go through firewall to PCM.

That wouldn't resolve the fact someone is feeding him bad info.

It's not a ready made kit. It's do-it-yourself. You get the switch out of a V8/auto trans Firebird (or simply get a switch and an led indicator), wire it up as indicated in the writeup, and have the PCM programmed to accept the input from the switch.
