OBD2 PCM with Stand alone??

I am trying to research if I am going to be able to run a stand alone while retaining the factory computer. Reason being is that I really don't want to replace my gauge cluster and also keep it so the car passes the emissions testing.

I haven't been able to find anything on the net at all. I am leaning towards the motec M880 system for the stand alone. It will be controling a 454 SBC in a 4th gen. The other thing is trying to locate someone that is fluent with the Motec for tune or at least a base tune.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Re: OBD2 PCM with Stand alone??

What part of your dash are you trying to salvage? The speedo will run off the stock PCM. The tach will need a work around because the stock PCM needs the Opti signal for RPM. And you might be able to use a Dakota Digital interface direct from the VSS to the speedo. All the other dash gauges are independant of the PCM. But your lack of an Opti is your biggest problem.

I run a MoTeC M48Pro in parallel with my 94 OBD-I PCM, but there are some interface issues. I kept the speedo and tach operating, and all the emissions stuff, like EGR, EEC and AIR. You will need dual sensors for things like IAT and coolant temp, since you can't parallel pure resistance circuits.

The big interface problem with be the absence of the Optispark high and low res pulse patterns on your 454. The stock PCM has problems without those signals. It shuts down the fuel system, meaning now you need a new way to activate your fuel pump. I use the Opti optical sensor to feed the MoTeC, and their IEX 8-channel ignition expander to fire 8 LS1 style coils in direct fire.

And, while I didn't have problems with my OBD-I 94 PCM, who knows what glitches the OBD-II PCM might cause.

I think its going to be extremely difficult to keep anything operating on the stock PCM without the Opti.

The sharpest guy I know with heavy experience with the MoTeC in LT1 chassis is Bill Hunsberger at Second Street Speed, but that's in PA.
