LT1_EDIT PCM Tweaking

Many people are discoverng the world of custom tunning your cars computers. Ive been looking into it quite a bit myself, and I believe i am going to go with the OBD1 cable and the LT1_EDIT software, from WWW.AKMCABLES.COM i have head nothing but GREAT comments from EVERYONE who has done business with him. If anyone if famillir with AKM, I am wondering what is involved with using the LT1_EDIT program. do you get any "base" to start with, how much guess work is involved to see what works best ? also is there any where to get a program for free? i found freescan, looks good, but i am mainly trying to raise my rev limiter? and jusut calibrate my spedo, get a little more power out of it too.

Well, I'll tell you right now not to bother wasting your $$$ on LT1_Edit, you have an OBD1 car and Tunercat will be not only cheaper but allow you to do alot more. Get the cable from Andrew (akmcables.com) but go to www.tunercat.com and get the 2.00 Tuner ($70) and the $EE defintion file ($20). You'll save yourself about $200 this way and you can use TC on as many cars as you want, unlike LT1_Edit, which is VIN locked to 1 car.

LT1_Edit is nice, I use it. But I have to agree that for the money, Tunercat is a very nice product. I use both, some things are easier with one program or the other. But as I said, TC is much more reasonably priced than LT1_Edit. As far as using it on multiple cars, I am kind of a stickler on that one. It's cheating, and since the program is so reasonably priced anyway there is little motivation to cheat.

The baseline program is the one already in your car. That's what you start with.

What do you mean by "cheating by using it on multiple cars?" TC's website even states that it's not car dependant and can be used on as many vehicles as you want. The only thing that I can think of cheating are those people who use a VIN editor to use multiple cars on LT1_Edit. All you need to do is buy the def files (and the tuner, of course, after the 30 day trial period).

That's surprising. You mean that there is no licensing agreement and I wasted $90?? I'll look at their site. Seems like they would never sell any software that way.

Ah, but that's the beauty of it, they have so many definition files that they can do that and still make plenty of money. Especially since it's been around for quite a long time, the tuner pretty much only needs to tweaked when a new set of definition files come out (such as when the LT1 FLASH 94-95 def file was developed. They had to add a FLASH reader/programmer in order to make it work). I expect to see a similar update when they finally get their OBD2 stuff out, which should be any time now (so I hope). It's the definition files that they get make the money on.
