Question LT1 scanmaster-blow up Prom?

I was at my mechanic's yesterday, and I trust these guys with my car (I wont trust anyone else) they've told me how to fix things I didnt know, and cut me so much slack on parts, bills, and everything, that I cant help but not listen to them. One of them just took a nice long electronics course, and as soon as he saw the scanmaster, told me it was bad, that they can fry the ECU by hooking into it. Has this ever happened? I dont need it for everyday use either way, but his comment was, get something like an o2 gauge and use that, and for when I'm tuning use it, but otherwise dont have it plugged in. I've never heard of this, but It makes me think. Has anyone ever had problems?

I wired mine directly into the wires by the OBDI connector and mounted it in my vent, so its constantly on, about 3 years ago.

I've NEVER had a problem, nor has anyone else that, or at least that i've heard of. And I believe quite a few people on here have them mounted/wired the same, for everyday use.

Personally, the 02 readings are a very small part of what I use my scanmaster for. I like the knock display, and all the fuel trim settings. So just getting an 02 guage would be a waste for me, especially seeing as tho its not that accuracte anyways.

But again, i've had mine for years now and never had a problem, I wouldn't worry about it at all. Use it and enjoy it!

I had a LT1 Scan Master frig my computer up. I had it wired properly but decided to attempt to download a tunercat program to my computer with the scan master hooked up. Well needless to say it fried two chips in the computer. I'm probably not the only one in the world that has done that. If you attempt to download a new program while your computer is in your car disconnect "All" 3 wires from the scan master!

I've been running the ScanMaster full-time for 4 years.... absolutley "0" problems. Your mechanic needs to repeat his training course.

Fred - you really need to read my article... explains very clearly how to wire the unit and the fact that you only need to actually connect the data wire to the ALDL connector, and need to have a way to disconnect it if you try to run anything on the ALDL.

Fred, I have been reading your article. I haven't set down and completely read the whole thing just sections. Maybe this weekend I'll read the whole thing. I said all the wires because I knew he couldn't go wrong that way. One thing is for sure you won't guide the guy wrong and as usual you have the best info. Keep up the good work,
Fred
