I need a '98 F-body ECM and I'm wondering if I can use one from a different year and have it reprogrammed. Can it be changed from 6-speed to automatic? That might make it easier to find. Also, could it come from a truck?

The PCMs changed in 2001 I believe, so I'm not sure how far you want to go with this. The easiest way to find out, look at the model number on the PCM, 16180815 or whatever, and match them up. As far as going from 6 to auto, I'm not sure, I know that you can go auto to 6 easily enough.

I'm installing the engine and automatic trans in a '40 Ford street rod. The aftermarket wiring systems recommend a '98 computer. I'm just wondering if there are others that can be used.

the breakdown of PCM's for the F-Body are as follows:

1. 94-95 PCM's are interchangable
(T-side/E-side 512's on both sides)

2. 96-97 PCM's are interchangable
(T-side/E-side 512 on E -side and 010 on T-side)

3. 98 PCM can ONLY be used with 98 (Only 1 Flash chip on ECU)

4. 99-2000 PCM's are interchangable (Only 1 Flash chip on ECU)

5. 2001-2002 PCM are interchangable

Its been a while, but i used to know this by heart, I am EX Hypertech employee...My duties in engineering was Re-flash "fried" PCM's.....now an FAST (Fuel Air Spark Tech) employee......KEVIN

Thanks for the info. I guess I'll start looking for a '98.
