Hypertec programmer or shop tuned?

Hi guys, I was wondering if I reprogrammed my computer will it affect the reliability of the car? My set up is a 1994 Z28 automatic with k&n intake set up, gm aluminum elbow, super compitetion hooker headers with y-pipe, magniflow high flow cat, flowmaster. If i go hypertec what should I change and if I go shop tuned what should I ask for and what should I have done? And just out of curiosity does a manual car need a programmer, chip, or tune or do they just make them like that programmed better? And one more thing like say fo instance I have a stock 1994 Z28 and I want to get it reprogrammed would they program it differently than a car with mods? And how much horsepower and torque should I expect to get? Thanks guys.

Any car can be "tuned". Does not depend on whether the trans is auto or manual. Whether you need a chip depends on the year of the car. For the LT1, the last year that had a replaceable chip was 1993. For 1994 and up you need to flash program.

Not sure what you mean by "do they just make them like that programmed better?" The stock tune is pretty good in both the auto and manual trans versions. Both suffer from the same problem - an overly rich target A/F ratio in power entichment (PE) mode = WOT. Easilly correct in a a mail order tune.

You can "tune" with the Hypertech, a mail order tune, or a dyno tune. Yes, the tune from a mial order source, or on a dyno will be different based on what mods you have. Bottom line on the Hypertech - don't even consider it. While it is useful to adjust for changes in rear axle ratio, tire diameter, remove the speed limiter, change the rev limiter, adjust the fan on/off temps, and adjust the shift point/firmness on the automatics, there is only one "canned" performance program that can be either installed or not installed. My measurements showed no improvement at all with the "power porgram" an a moderately mod'd engine (CAI, Borla catback, and eventually headers). Magazine tests have actually shown a loss of power on anything but a purely stock engine. That is unless you also get the 160-deg thermostat and revise the fan on/off temps.

You are 100% better off sending your PCM to a mail order tuner. Much better results than you will achieve with the Hypertech.
