Question Do I have to change or reprogram my stock computer after I put a 383 crankshaft in?

I have a 1997 Camaro SS LT1. I'm rebuilding the motor and plan on putting a 383 crank, will I have to reprogam or replace my computer? How much will the 383 crank help?
thanx alot,
Jamie

A 383 crank will give you 33 more cubic inches of displacement. As a minimum, you need to tell the PCM the new cylinder volume. What else are you changing (besides the obvious - pistons)? If you alter the cam or port the heads, you will have more changes to make.

Need more info to accurately answer the question.

Oh yeah, the stock tune will run it so lean that its dangerous (for the life of your engine and pocketbook)

I would start with the simple stuff, Cold Air Intake (CAI) , a 3 inch cat-back exhaust system by a reputable company (Hooker, flowmaster,SLP,Magnaflow, Borla, etc), Then get a tune and an appropriate thermostat. At that point I'd see how you liked it and your comfort level.

I hope you realize you cant just "put in a 383 crank". It requires machine work and a host of other things. If you want to rebuilt your 350 as a 383 youre going to need a host of other things to go along with it, none of which are cheap. Expect a minimum of 5000 for a "budget 383" not to mention the additional HP will easily tear up your rear end if you plan on racing it. If its a 6 speed youre going to need a new clutch at the minimum to hold all that power also. You're also going to need a tune like you asked to safely run it, a mail order tune will get you running, but a dyno tune would be much better, and much more expensive.

I'm getting all the machine work done to the motor this week, and we've already ordered the 383 kit from summit. My friends suggested i put some pullys and a new camshaft in along with the new computer. Is that a good idea? What read end modifications would i have to make for racing. I've already raced one of my friends with a mustang gt and he killed me in the quarter mile.

What exactly are the steps you have to take when replacing your computer? In a thread at the top of the page someone said that the new computer or tuning will only be a start! What exactly are the steps after that?

Goto the LT1 tech section and ask what all should be done in an LT1 to accompany a 383 shortblock.

(Higher flowing heads, optimum cam, larger injectors, free er flowing intake system and exhaust system etc.)
