diagnostics cable

I have the obd1 cable with akm cables 8 prong adapter. The problem is most new laptops no longer carry this type of connection (8 prong). Is there a cheap adapter I could run to go from the 8 prong to a usb type connection at radioshack or do I have to order a whole new cable specifically designed for usb?

Re: diagnostics cable

You really have to do some searching.. Assume you are talking DB9, 9 pin serial RS232, OBD1 cable. You can purchase a Serial to USB adapter, but not all adapters will work. There used to be a list of supported adapters from some of the ALDL cable manufactures around, I think TunerCat sells an adapter for $55 ($$$) I have not seen an updated list lately. Incorrect adapters can cause problem, so that's why many have bit the bullet and gone to USB ALDL cables w/newer drivers. Maybe someone will chime in and tell what adapter they are using for the serial cables.. if it's still available.

Re: diagnostics cable

Andrew/AKM used to recommend/sell the Belkin F5U103. Got to be a 7-8 year old part at this point.

Andrew sold all his designs to TunerCats.... they have a USB to Serial kit with converter and cable for $59.25 including shipping:
