Bump timing up to 50+ ????

.....to eliminate cam surge in the really low load/low rpm blocks? I have already tried bumping it to 48 in the low load/low rpm blocks where I see the surge. I know some of you will bump timing until you see knock, then back off, in order to get the most timing you can get away with to eliminate surge as much as possible. I don't know that I'm comfortable with that or that it's a good idea. Also, I would have to raise the "max timing relative to" above 46 in order to get it to actually reach more than say 47 ..right? Even if you don't see knock, 50+ still seems like a lot of strain and heat.
