'93 Knock Sensor Tuning

I have a Moates.net Autoprom that I have been using to tweak the program in the car. This setup is also used to log data from drag strip runs. Last Friday, I made two runs at the drag strip, the first of which had severe knock retard. The timing at 95 and 100 kPa was set to 36 degrees, but knock retard kicked it back to 26, and it never fully recovered during the run. I then reduced the timing to 34 degrees, and set the Maximum Knock Retard vs RPM and the Maximum Knock Retard vs MAP tables to 0 degrees. This showed no knock retard, but timing was only 29 degrees throughout the whole run!!! My question is, how can I eliminate this false knock retard problem using the tables in Tuner Pro RT? Besides the two tables mentioned above, there is Knock Retard Gain Factor vs RPM and Knock Retard Recovery Factor vs RPM. Have any of you tuned out this problem using these tables, and if so, how did you do it? Also, I have taken the necessary measures to ensure that this is truly false knock.

If your car is picking up knock, it will enable "Low Octane" mode. You have to set these to 0 knock as well.

On a stock tune, it takes out a fixed 3.5 degrees above 2,400 rpm. But it will multiply that figure by 1.56, so effectively taking out 5.46 degrees.

You can change the multiplier on the "Low Octane ESC Multiplier vs RPM" and "Low Octane ESC vs MAP".

On these table you will notice a multiplier of .56 above 4,000 rpm and a multiplier of 1 vs MAP above 75.

Good Luck.

Thanks for the info! The only problem with that is Tuner Pro RT does not have the tables you mentioned. I wonder if I have the wrong definition file, does anyone with a '93 and an Auto Prom have these tables in their definition files? And if so, what file are you using?

Ohh, sorry I thought you had TunerCat RT. The definition file should be $DA3 with Tunercat, not sure if any different with other software. It probably is.

These tables should be there just probably named different. I can't imagine how you would cut knock completely without these tables.

Good Luck!

Apparently Tuner Cat is a little better than Tuner Pro, but Tuner Pro is what came with my APU1. Since you have a '93 also, what setup are you using to tune your car? I am using DA3 (no $ symbol on mine), but it does not have any tables even slightly resembling the ones I need. Did you have to pay for your definition file? If not, would you be willing to send it to me? It's understandable if you paid and don't want to give it away for free. It would be interesting to compare the files to see other differences as well. Thanks again for the help!

It is $20 from the Tunercat website. I believe you either download it or they will e-mail it to you. Cant remember, its been a few years.

I wouldn't want to undermine their business, and besides it is only $20.

You should ask if it will work with TunerPro first.

Good Luck.

Ok thanks, it seems weird that the Tuner Pro xdf file does not have a complete set of tables. Makes me wonder what else is missing. Just curious, what hardware do you use for tuning (ie do you burn chips and replace them each time or do you have an emulator like the APU1)?

This is what I use. I dont have experience with anything other than Tunercat.

This is what I wrote to another board member needing to get started.

1. Programming software (I recommend Tunercat). Go to Tunercat.com, less than $100, cant remember
2. You need the $DA3 definition file, "93 LT1" program. $20 @ Tunercat.com.
3. A Chip Burner (I recommend the Pocket EPROM Programmer) $249 (USB Connection) Go to Xtronics.com
4. Chips "27C256", part number 16159278. Buy a couple. Not expensive. Go to Xtronics.com
5. A module to allow you to swap chips on your PCM. Go to Moates.net and buy the "G1" Memory Adapter. $35.00

I can't believe I never thought of this...., if you still need help send your tune file and I will see if I can open it using Tunercat. I will make the changes you need and sent it back to you.

Just a thought.
