turbo engine?

my buddy knows where i can pickup a transam cheap. he's said it's a 1980 pretty clean with t tops and 70K on the clock.

but he said it's a limited edition that came with a turbo charged sbc.
anyone heard of this?? i didn't think turbos came until fuel injection got big in the mid eighties?

any info would help, what engines were offered in the last 2nd gens?

thanks,
mike

Yep, it is turbo charged. Not very fast, but it is indeed turbo.

In 1981 Yenko built turbo charged Z28s. I think it was a mid 14 second car.

Are you sure that was a Yenko? I was thinking it was from Motion, but not 100% on that...

Re: turbo engine?

The Turbo Trans Am isn't a small-block Chevy, it's a Pontiac 301 that's been turbo charged through a carb.
I think they made somewhere around 200hp... not very fast for a 3800lb+ car. On top of that, the 301 isn't the easiest engine to do up! Lucky for you, a big cube Pontiac should bolt in pretty easily.

Re: turbo engine?

well we picked up the car, i must say, best $200 ever spent! lol

1980 T/A, seems to be a possible pace car edition, hood says turbo charged but someone did a motor swap and there is a 5.0L carbed in its place. and it even runs and drives!! body is pretty solid interior is torn up some but all in all not too bad!

Re: turbo engine?

Are you sure it's a 5.0L Chevy and not the original 4.9L Pontiac engine with all the turbo crap taken off?

Danm, that's too bad, I guess the 455 won't just bolt right in after all.
