Problem found?

For those of you who were kind enought to follow my last thread, THANKS!! Here is what I have found. I bought new plugs and MSD wires. I pulled the distributor cap off to check everything and found something odd. Aside from the mechanical advance, I was able to wiggle the rotor shaft about 1/16". So \, I pulled out the distributor to find that the gear is chewed up pretty bad. I mean each tooth is about 35% eaten away!!! You can see in the pics. Now, my first question..........Are the cam gears harder than the distributor gear to prevent this situation from tearing up BOTH sets of gears? I took a pic of the cam gears, but can't really see them good enough to tell. I assume that this was givign me erratic timing and is why I couldn't tune the car.

Are the distributor gears hard to replace?

Also, look at my plugs!!!! You can see one of the new ones, and all my old ones. This is LESS THAN 50 MILES!!!

So, I am hoping that the new wires, plugs, FULL exhuaust, and distributor gear should fix the problem. What do you think about the cap contacts? Thanks

Re: Problem found?

not sure about the cam gear being harder but the dist. gear is easy to replace just use a punch to push the pin that holds the gear on and it will fall off

Re: Problem found?

distributor gear is made of a softer metal so you dont damage the cam
yuor plugs are really carbond up what do you have on it for a carb and what jets are in it its way to rich your plugs should be a brown colour not black
and if your timming is all over the place look for a vacume leake or check how much vacume your engin makes with a gauge if you are running a holley and your power valve is not the correct one for you vacum that could be your hole problem you distributor gear dosent look all that bad to me
