oil temp guage and brakes

Hi-yes I'm new and yes I'm a girl Sorry if this is a stupid question. I just got me a 79 z28 and had to replace the brakes-I got the shoes replaced and the mechanic said that my brake boosters could be out because there isn't much stopping power. Is this right? Also my oil guage was on 40 for the past 4 days and now it has jumped to 80- Any suggestions??? Thanks

Hey, what's up? You have a Pontiac 400 in that? How did that happen? If anything, people drop chevy motors into pontiacs b/c of cost and availibility.....Oh well. As for the brakes, when you press the pedal down, is it squishy, do you hear air? If you pump them a few times, will it get a little harder? If so, there's air in the lines, and they have to be bled. Try this before changing the booster. If a booster is shot, you will probably have NO stopping power!

Edit = I checked out your page, very sweet car!!!

Thank you very much!!! That was before my z28 rims and the paint and interior-I need to post some new pics. The brakes work fine for me,but they don't stop on a dime like they're spose to. I guess I'm used to my 96 berettas brakes. I have the beretta at my grandmothers and wanted this camaro more. My beretta is white with yellow trim-It's cool but has 111,000 miles. The guy I got the camaro from put a 400 in it-I don'tknow why??? The oiltemp guage is wierd and I just got the speedometer fixed but it still jumps up to 40 and down. After about 10 miles it evens out and starts to work again---Anyway-It gets me from point A to B at 15 mpg using 93 octane(There goes my paycheck!)

Hmm, if you want to stop faster, try softer pads. They won't last as long, (but they still last enough don't worry), but they grip better. I have softer pads on my T/A. I had huge problems with air in the lines, used softer pads, new lines, new master and wheel cylidners, etc etc. It was a nightmare, but OK now. How much power does this thing have? Do you know what work has been done to it? I'm surprised you get 15 mpg, I get 12 city MAXIMUM, was the same before the motor buildup lol......Oil pressure gagues, and any gagues in old cars for that matter, rarely work. My oil pressure was stuck down to almost 0 (BUT IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN RIGHT LOL) because when I toasted my motor, LONG story, I found out the oil pump was shot for a LONG time.....I got a new oil pump (duh) and new sending units, and pressure seems to work. Sending unit might be shot, that's the best case secnario......Hard to get all the gagues to work, my dad's charger has about 0 working gagues, gas works a little, speedo is OK.......but you have to watch the mileage you put on it to be sure as to your fuel level lol.....he's been drving like that for 20 yrs, same goes with my mom's 70 charger, 2 sets of gagues, speedo don't work, it's off by like 30 mph lol, fuel is off, temp works though lol. If you don't abuse the hell out of the car, you can get by with minimal gagues.....

I'd say it has a good 375 HP-probably more-It has a edelbrock carb,Hooker headers,a Comp cam,3 inch cat- back exhaust, msd ignition, etc. I figured up gas mileage-a little over 12. Now whenever my car is hot-after 15 miles or so-It won't crank-The battery amps go down and I have to let it sit for about 10 minutes before it will crank. Do you think I need to get a stronger battery???

More likely a new starter. Either that or try a heat shield on the starter.
