I remember when I got my headers, my mechanic had to bypass it, and rip it out, because of no clearance on this damn car. He ended up being able to rig something where I can just turn my steering column myself and the reverse lights will go on or off. It made the car be able to start in just about any gear, if I remember. All I know is that it is not all that hard to pull out I believe, but TTT for ya. Yes, it can be bypassed is all I know. My local mechanic knew how to get rid of it easily and rig me with that column thingy I was talking about in a matter of minutes.

on my 69 auto that shifts on the floor it is the 2 purple wires that go to the shifter (push on type connector). There are only 3 or 4 (don't remember) wires going to the shifter, 2 for the neutral safety switch and 1 or 2 for the back up lights. Unplug the 2 purple ones and see if it will start (in park of course). If it will, then the car will now start in any gear, if not then make a jumper wire with 2 push in connectors to connect the 2 wires, and then it will start in any gear (I forgot if it was connected=on or disconnected=on).

Although, this is there for a reason...
