Help with my 327

I've been on this board for years and have never been in here

Picked up a 68 coupe last week. Powerglide is getting rebuilt as I type this. What I have noticed is when i floor it in the low gear their is quite a bit of hesitation. I can also hear a very audible tick with I'm behind the wheel and driving. When I bough it the dude said he replaced the timing chain but I'm not sure if he knew what he was doing.

Help a brotha out guys!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Help with my 327

Congrats on the purchase & welcome to the quietest corner of CZ28.

When you say hesitation, do you mean it takes it a while for the engine to respond, or does the engine respond but there isn't much acceleration? If it's the latter, probably a result of the horrible 1st gear in the PG combined with a tall gear in the diff. You sure you want to rebuild the PG? A th350 is a straight swap in.

As far as the tick, could be a loose rocker or an exaust leak.

I got the PG rebuilt for free. My neighbor owns a VERY well know shop here. When I put my foot down the car hiccups for a few and then takes off.

Re: Help with my 327

Sounds more like a carb tuning issue than a tranny issu or timing issue IMO. Sounds like a typical quadra junk ie Carter/edelbrock/rodchester carb symptom

The tranny had no high gear. Just the lower. It has a holley 650 4bbl and a Weiland Intake. She idels just fine but has that tick. I do believe it may be a lifter as well because it increases with RPM's.

Re: Help with my 327

Was the car sitting before you bought it? If so, the check ball up under the accelerator shot squirter may be stuck. With the engine off, look down the throats the primaries and work the throttle to see if you get the 2 squirts. If you don't, use a phillips/needle nose to carefully remove the squirter. The check ball is directly underneath. Squirt some carb cleaner down in there to dissolve the gunk. Pop the squirter back on and recheck. If that doesn't fix it, carb has to come apart.

If the carb is ok, next thing to check would be timing.

Re: Help with my 327

I get 2 shots, so I know the carbs good. I can't find a timing mark. I'm going to replace the lifters and push rods and call it a day.
