help with building a 327
help with building a 327
i know it is not a camaro but i dont know where else to turn for carb engine advise. i have been building my EFI car and havent dont have too much knowledge on carbed stuff. anyway here we go.....
we are finally getting started on our 64 chevelle (malibu ss) and i need some opinions on the way i am going to build it.
here is what we are running FOR SURE.......(will be a street/show car/no dragging)
10 bolt w/3.42's
turbo 350 with a 2,400-2,800 stall
now, here are the two ways we are thinking of building the 327
setup 1:
Wold products S/R torquer heads
Edelbrock Performer intake
Trick Flow 210/216 (440/454)
crane 1.5 RR's,stock replacement pushrods/lifters
.30 over bore with speed pro forged pistons (9.07:1 comp)
summit stage 1 connecting rods
edelbrock 600 cfm carb
setup 2:
world products Sportsman 2 heads
performer RPM intake
crane 226/234(458/473) or trick flow 228/234 (480/494)
crane 1.6 gold race RR's,crane pushrods/lifters
.30 over w/speed pro foged pistons (10.35:1 comp)
summit stage 2 connecting rods
edelbrock 650 cfm carb
does everything sound right in each combo?
carb stuff is somewhat new to me and i dont know if each combo has a decent size carb
i am only looking to make 375-400 hp at the fly here. no big huge HP numbers. just a moderately fast street/show car
which one to do?

Personally since its a street car, I'd go with the Edelbrock Performer and 750cfm Q-Jet. Real easy to tune and very little (i.e. no) adjustment required after initial setup.
I ran that setup on my 68 Camaro with a 327 and 2spd PG.

Both of the combinations have well matched components. First one would be a good basic performance/mileage engine. The second would be more of a higher rpm engine. First one might have a chance at 300 FWHP, the second would make it to 375 if the bigger trick flow cam was used, but you wouldn't like the take off with an auto and 3.42's. 327's are not torque engines to begin with, and a cam around 230 won't help that. With that cam and an auto, I think 4.11's would be a better choice.
Since you are going to run 3.42's for sure, either the first combination, or the second one with the 226 cam. Or maybe even a 218 cam.
Carb size is ok on both, but a 750 would be better if you use the trick flow cam ... and 4.11 gears.
thanks for all the help guys.
i have been thinking a little more and have some more thoughts.
mabey drop in a 283 crank and make it a 302 and work with that. only problem is that i dont think that will make more power, it would just be neat. this is a heavy car.
or use a 350 crank.
considering just buiding a 350 and work with that.
and there are always big blocks.
so tough to chose.
this is going to be a show car, but i dont want it lacking in any area.

if its a show car, i say go for something out of the ordinary. if a 327 is what you have, then use that. they're not ordinary motors, and can be pretty cool if you pay attention to detail. what might be cool on your car is some sort of trick dual quad manifold such as a cross ram. a big victor might be cool as well, if you run a bit of cam and have some big heads, but then again, gear ratio comes into play. a procharger or vortech supercharger would definitely set you apart, especially on a 327. a roots would be cool, but may be a bit too flashy, and you'd have to cut holes in the hood... however, a supercharger would allow you to retain much of what you already have such as the 3.42 gears and stall converter, and you could skimp on the heads and camshaft because it won't require anything really special in order to make good power. forged pstons might be a good idea with this setup. just some ideas that might make you stand out.
as for big blocks: yes they are cool. 396s and 427s are a rarity these days...i'd say go for the 427 tho. you could go either way with it, high rpm and freaky, or mild and smooth. a well thought out hydraulic roller equipped motor should be able to hit 6500 rpm, so i'm told, and have a decent idle. all things to consider, it all depends on what exactly you want. tire frying nuttyness, a high winding freak, or a silky smooth motor that goes as well.

I'm not sure about the Qjet being easy to tune. I ran one on a 67 442 with a 236 degree cam, ported heads, m21 and a 4.88 12 bolt and had a hell of a time with the carb tune.

I never touched the carb again.
I had more trouble getting the AT kick-down set up properly than anything else because I went from a 2bbl to the 4bbl.
My buddy down the block also had a 68 Camaro, but his was a 327 with a Holley double pumper. He had his hood up and was tuning that thing at least once a week... while I was out driving.
I like option #2. I built my 327 about 10 years ago and I'm looking at re-doing it soon. Here is what I did
TRW forged 10.1 pistons bored .030
Bowtie heads (I want to get them ported)
Comp 280 magnum cam. I should have went with a roller
Forged rods
The crank out of my '67 was already steel so I didn't mess with it.
High pressure oil pump
With my 12 bolt and 4.56 gears it's a blast around the neighborhood. Good luck with the project.

cool, i have taken all this into consideration. im just going to get it running for the time being. i think that i am just going to rebuild the 327 with 10:1 compression. that is about all i have decided for now. ill figure it all out later. all it needs to run right now is a good carb. thanks guys!!!
