Do we have a 327???

What are the sure fire ways of telling if you have a 327???

My nephew just picked up a 72 camaro that was sitting for the past 11 years in someone's back yard, the car was originally purchased by that family and was originally a 6cyl...
The son got it in the 80's and from his memory he put a 327 out of a vette into it..
Is there any way to verify this? I helped him put a starter in it this past weekend and when we went to the parts store to compare the one that came out of the car with ones for '60's vette 327's the bolt holes where it mounts to the block were different, I then asked to compare it to the starter for the 72 camaro 350 and it was the same exact starter...
Does that mean this is a 350? Or are there multiple starter mounting hole's in the block, sorry I didn't look at the block too much because I was teaching him how to work on his car, and explaining how everything worked and went together...

Any help is greatly appreciated...

Re: Do we have a 327???

There are multiple holes in the block. 2 starters were used, one for small flywheel/flexplate, one for large. Either could be used. Some newer blocks only have one set drilled.

The original engine code, if still present, will tell you what it came out of. It is stamped on a block pad in front of engine on passenger side. You can also look at the casting # on the back of engine, drivers side, where the bellhousing bolts up. Cross the casting # to it's application at mortec.com.

OK, I should heve made it clear... I know how to tell by pulling the motor down, I was just wondering if there was a way without doing that...

Try telling a 16 year old boy that he has to pull the motor apart just because we are curious what motor it is, that doesn't work here. Plus when he bought it he was only given a month by his parents to get it in a reliable condition so that he could start driving it to school, they are now moving in a couple of weeks to a new house and he will have no other way to get to school...

We are just getting it going and not building it up or anything, so due to his budget, and his skill level, because I am still teaching him things, we are not opening up the motor anytime soon, unless we need to.

I know you said that you aren't building it up, but I specifically rmember a cam swap combo that worked well for me on a 327 '67 camaro I had a bazillion years ago. I never took it to the track, but it worked well at the 9:00-11:00 street races and I didn't start losing big until the 'After Midnight' races.

Comp Cams 280H
Weiand Team-G
Holley 750 Vacuum
Recurve the distributor
Headers

That'll give you a nice 6800-7000 rpm engine, so it's not beyond the stock internals, assuming that you already have good oil pressure and it's not burning oil.

It works best with a 4-speed, but if he has a THM350 in there it'll also work well with a 10" converter.

Just something relatively easy and inexpensive, and the best part is that it'll work well with both the stock heads and a set of modern heads he can buy later.

Re: Do we have a 327???

Yeah thanks for that, but I know my sister would kill me if I taught him to start moding the car now..

That will have to wait until X-mas

But again thanks for the info on a good combo, I have never had a 327 but I know they like to rev, I was probably going to get on here to get sugestion about mods in a few months when he gets used to the car, and driving on his own...

Get the casting number off the block, then look it up on the net or enter it here and I and I will look it up.
