Best overdrive transmission for a 69 big block chevy???
Best overdrive transmission for a 69 big block chevy???
I have a Muncie M-20 trans in my Camaro and 4:11 gears that i don't want to change. It sometimes pops out of gear so I might be looking in to another transmission in the future.I would like to get a Transmission with a overdrive 5 or 6 speed.I have heard of Gear Vendors but how do they work for the Muncie transmissions???
The Gear Vendor overdrive is a very strong unit, but it's not cheap. The Tremec TKO is a 5 speed with overdrive, but it might not hold up to the torque of the big block. My 91 SS454 pickup has the 4L80E automatic overdrive trans and with the 4.10 gears it's a great combination. But you would need the transmission and electronic controller to put it in your 69. A T56 out of a Viper should be able to hold the torque of the big block but getting all the little parts to make it work will add up $$$. All the options I listed will probably run you somewhere in the $2-3000 range. Unfortunately, it's not cheap to do.
Im not sure how much the Gear vendor's are???I definately want a manual transmission and would never switch to an automatic trans. A T-56 Viper trans sounds good but the question is how would it align and how much modifications would have to be done to make it fit.One of the main reasons I like manual transmissions is when using my 150 HP nitrous kit I only use it in 3rd and 4th gear and it has alot more seat of the pants power then with an automatic.I don't care about first gear and the launch because I don't race the car and manual transmissions are just plain funner on the street.Main thing right now is when i get the car running and out of storage is to hook up a gas gauge and see how many miles I can get driving around town.My 595 lift cam,780 Holley double pumper carb rebuilt by TCI, can't help either.Does anyone think i would get less then 10 miles per gallon with 4:11 gears and a 28 inch tall tire???
You'll be lucky to get 10 mpg. My 91 SS454 pickup is fuel injected with a mild cam and wimpy heads with 4.10 gears and overdrive with 28" tall tires and I barely avg 11 mpg. Your car is lighter obviously, but I can't see how you would be able to get better than 10 if you can even get that. Overdrive won't really help that much either. With a big block, you need some form of direct port injection with 3.42 gears and overdrive to even hope to get 15 mpg.
Yeah the way my car is set up it sounds like a race car except fot the heads and compression ratio, but that was never my intention when I had it built.I have never raced the car but I always wanted a street terror but one that I could cruise with and get some descent gas maleage with. After having the car for many years and not driving it, I feel like now i want to keep it but its like driving a race car everywhere I go.It draws to much attention to even cruise around town with. With that a big lopey idle.I am seriously thinking about a LS1 engine swap in the future but I know it is not cheap but I have heard of alot of guys putting it in there 69 Big Block car???I got to get some information about this swap and how much modifications are involved.Maybe if I get 8 miles to the gallon I would be lucky but until i get a gas gauge and speedometer hooked up Im guessing 7-11???
