My car had been hit in the driver side rear quarter panel before I bought it. I am guessing the rearend was hurt also because it had a 2.41 posi in it. The build sheet said it came with a 3.42. Nothing like going through the traps(1/4 mile) in 2nd gear at 4000 rpm.

My guess is somewhere along the line before you bought your Z, the diff let go and someone threw a Trans Am or regular Camaro diff under the back end.

Yeah, 2.56's were sorta rough for off-the-line performance, although with the torque of the stroker, I could still get a good hole shot, and it cruised nice on the highway! (without o/d!). I swear to god, it would do almost 120 km/h (~70+ mph) in 1st gear!!! (obviously screaming the engine over 6000rpm)...............then 2nd and 3rd were just like over-drives!

DAVE, in regards to your "clarifications" on all the spec's and the options for the Z28's, you brought up a couple points I never even clued into --- the fact that 2.56's weren't an available gear for a Canadian Z28..................BUT, I know that my car was a "basterdized" car (for lack of a better term), since someone had installed aftermarket T-tops (which rattled and leaked like hell ) and although I believe the Borg-Warner T-10 4-speed was original, the engine was definitely not. I also believe that the 2.56's probably weren't either. My car was a Z28 for sure (it had the stripes, spoilers, sway bars, Z28 steering wheel) but I bet it had parts off a plain-jane "Camaro", such as the 2.56's, and even the grill, which was from a Berlinetta I think? (see the pics). So it was sort of a "cobbled up mess" until I got it and fixed it up. Thanks for clarifying!

Yeah, with the 2.73's in my '02, I can almost hit that in 1st! I just can't rev to ~7000 rpm though!? I think my engine might not like it?!

I like Z's but they are very common compared to the "plain-jane" berlinetta. I am a real fan of both but I enjoy a rarer "Top of the line" plain jane without the Z status. Thats pretty well what my car is. Im lacking certain body accesories but engine, tranny, and differential are all original to the car. My car is a documented 3:73 from factory which I'm guessing was a "SPECIAL ORDER".
I'm happy with it.

I seriously doubt your car came with those gears from the factory. The Berlinetta only got a 14" wheel even as an option, so that would put highway RPM's at near 3000 RPM at 60 mph. The era when you could 'special order' items like deeper gears, was LONG since past in 1979. I'm 40, and I remember those cars in high school. Only the Z/28 that year could get a 3.73 gear, and you got it if you ordered the 4-speed manual. You could NOT get the 3.73 even in the Z/28, if it was an automatic. You got the 3.42 gear for auto trans.

If you couldn't even get the 3.73 gear as an option in the Rally Sport, I seriously doubt you could get it in the Berlinetta, since that trim level was designed more for luxury and not performance.

Not trying to be argumentative here, just pointing out GM did not do the 'special order' thing with gears in the Camaros of your vintage. The dealer *might* have installed the 3.73's, but not the factory.

From what - your build sheet? If thats the case, scan it and post it here so we can have a look.

Thanks,
Dave (waiting in anticipation )
