My car had been hit in the driver side rear quarter panel before I bought it. I am guessing the rearend was hurt also because it had a 2.41 posi in it. The build sheet said it came with a 3.42. Nothing like going through the traps(1/4 mile) in 2nd gear at 4000 rpm.

My guess is somewhere along the line before you bought your Z, the diff let go and someone threw a Trans Am or regular Camaro diff under the back end.

DAVE, in regards to your "clarifications" on all the spec's and the options for the Z28's, you brought up a couple points I never even clued into --- the fact that 2.56's weren't an available gear for a Canadian Z28..................BUT, I know that my car was a "basterdized" car (for lack of a better term), since someone had installed aftermarket T-tops (which rattled and leaked like hell ) and although I believe the Borg-Warner T-10 4-speed was original, the engine was definitely not. I also believe that the 2.56's probably weren't either. My car was a Z28 for sure (it had the stripes, spoilers, sway bars, Z28 steering wheel) but I bet it had parts off a plain-jane "Camaro", such as the 2.56's, and even the grill, which was from a Berlinetta I think? (see the pics). So it was sort of a "cobbled up mess" until I got it and fixed it up. Thanks for clarifying!

I like Z's but they are very common compared to the "plain-jane" berlinetta. I am a real fan of both but I enjoy a rarer "Top of the line" plain jane without the Z status. Thats pretty well what my car is. Im lacking certain body accesories but engine, tranny, and differential are all original to the car. My car is a documented 3:73 from factory which I'm guessing was a "SPECIAL ORDER".
I'm happy with it.

If you couldn't even get the 3.73 gear as an option in the Rally Sport, I seriously doubt you could get it in the Berlinetta, since that trim level was designed more for luxury and not performance.
Not trying to be argumentative here, just pointing out GM did not do the 'special order' thing with gears in the Camaros of your vintage. The dealer *might* have installed the 3.73's, but not the factory.
