Hey CapnPete: I noticed on your webpage you state your 1981 Z28 came with a 2.56 gear? From the factory?
I've had 2 of those cars, and in my experience they only came with one of two ratios: 3.08 with a 4-speed, and 3.42 with an automatic.
Just curious as to why the car had a 2.56 gear.

. That engine ran like crap, and eventually spun a rod bearing, so that's when my dad generously "donated" the 383 he bought from a friend of his (I love you dad!
). Around the same time, the clutch blew, and instead of buying a new one, we put the TH350 in the car that my dad also just "happened to have"
(gotta love mechanics with connections!
). Since I was 17 and sucked at driving standard at the time, we thought the auto would be better. In the process of all this, we acquired a couple different parts cars, and one of them is the car where I got the 3.42's from. So, long story short, the 2.56's were an original gear (and yes, it was still a posi rear end!) and my car went through many transformations in its life!

OH YEAH, I'm also the biggest a$$hole for selling it
. I still kick my own a$$ for that.

If you read on NastyZ28.com (this page) you'll see that 2.56's were an option for some cars --- either with the V6, or with the 267 or 305 V8. My car had a 350 and a 4-speed when I got it, but I know for a fact they weren't original..........well, the engine wasn't --- it was a 3970010 (2-bolt) block, which was not available in '81

Okay, I was under the impression your car is a Z-28. If it is an original Z-28, and it is a Canadian car, then it would have come from the factory with the LM-1 350. In both 1980 and 1981 -for Canadian Z-28's - you had the choice of either a Borg-Warner Super T-10 4-speed manual (with 3.42 first gear ratio) and 3.08 rear axle gears, or the TH350 automatic trans. with a 3.42 posi rear axle. All Canadian (aka 'Export') Z-28 Camaro's in both 1980 and 1981 came with the LM-1 350 with either 4-speed manual or TH350 automatic transmission. In the US, those Z-28's for domestic market only came with the 305 if you ordered the car with the 4-speed, and the LM-1 could be had with the automatic. The (US domestic market) LM-1 had Computer Command Control which the Canadian cars did not.
I have owned two 1980 Z-28s (one 4-speed; one automatic), and was the 2nd owner of both. These cars both had their orginal drivetrains still in them when I purchased them (the 4-speed car I bought in 1989; the automatic in 1994). The 4-speed car had 3.08 (limited-slip) and the auto. trans car had 3.42 gears (also with limited-slip).
If however, your car is a Camaro - but not a Z-28 - then it could have any number of engine/transmission combinations as you posted.
So, long story short, the 2.56's were an original gear (and yes, it was still a posi rear end!) and my car went through many transformations in its life!
Just wanted to get some clarification on that.

Thanks,
Dave
