400sb 2 bolt or 4 bolt??
400sb 2 bolt or 4 bolt??
I assumed that a 4 bolt 400 block would be better than a 2 bolt block but now I've heard that the 2 bolt block is stronger, maybe in the webbing or something like that? Can't really remember. Anyone know anything about it? Thanks.
If you ever get a chance to look at a two bolt and a 4 bolt block, look closely at the outer bolt hole in the 4 bolt block and you will see why they are weaker. They really thin out the block material in this area. The only way to get more strength, is to run the splayed outer bolts. By the way i have run 10's on a two bolt block!
I run a 2-bolt 400 block. The 4-bolt is indeed a weaker casting. The outer bolts go into a thin area of the block and actually weaken the casting more than helping it.
The 2-bolt main caps of the 400 are much beefier than the caps for all other small blocks. Put them both side by side and that will become readily apparent. A 2-bolt 400 is a pretty strong piece. I have never seen one break in the cap area in my own experience. The crank is one tough ***** also. As SDAKOVIC posted, a 2-bolt block will make 10-second power without too much trouble.
