Wiring for a Fan Switch

I wired a two way switch with 3 wires. One grounded to a nut (for the light for the switch) one to the side of the dash fuse box under the "battery" open slot, and the third under the hood in onto the "cooling fan 1" relay. My car ran fine with me able to turn the fan on and off at will, but i thought the fans would run normal besides my manually switching them. They didn't, the car i noticed as i sat there for about 10 min got close to the red with no fans to be seen, so i switched the switch and it popped. Now i have no fans. Any adivce on where to go?
