Power Wire Question

I have already run a power wire from the engine compartment to where my spare tire is. The wire is not quite long enough now that im ready to do something with it. Is it possible to connect another piece of similar wire to the wire already there? I think it is 8 guage wire. It will be great if i can do that.

Thanks.

You CAN but...... I would avoid it. Not good to have unnecessary connections. #1= potential power loss, #2 potential dangerous. If the connection were to come loose, or get wet, or.... etc. etc. etc. If you are going to do it, use the same size wire. 8g in your case and a simple butt connector. I believe the size you need are commonly yellow.

I would say it's allright if it's done correctly and also depending on what wire gauge it is. 8ga can be done correctly by Soldering and Heatshrinking. If you're talking about 4 Ga you're either going to need to but a Dist. Block or Fuse block on it to connect it.

Why would he use a distributuon block if it's only 8AWG wire and he is not changing wire size? I agree with 97Formula and say that crimp and solder would be fine. I wouldn't spend the money on the distribution block...... hell...... if that was the case I'd just spend the money and buy all new 8AWG and run it the whole way this time!! Just buy new wire or use a yellow butt connector and flux some solder on in there. I also agree that this would not be the best way is he was using any bigger then 8 AWG.
