ok this is what i found out if you have a bose your screwed if it is a monsoon you have options. yes it can be done but you have to rewire it to bypass the amp behind the spare tire or you can replace it with an amp of your own. 95 and up to 97 could of come with the bose or the monsoon. There you have it

well, i guess the reason i think i have a monsoon is that it looks exactly like one. i've sat in a new Z06 Corvette before and the CD player looked EXACTLY like mine. it's got 2 speakers in the front, 2 in the sail panels and 2 in the rear.
so assuming i have a monsoon, i will have to more or less remove the amp behind the sparetire and wire in a new one?
can anyone give me anymore info on this? what exactly does the amp behind the spare tire do?

UPGRADED Sound System options:

'93-'96 = Bose

'97-'02 = Monsoon. The '97 and early '98 models didn't have the Monsoon logo on the HU, but they were the Monsoon system.

In the '97-'02 Monsoon equipped Camaro's, you can just change the Monsoon HU with a standard GM wiring harness and it will work just fine. However, there is NOT an adapter at this time that will allow an aftermarket HU to control the stock changer.

If you have a '93-'96 Bose equipped Camaro, then you can change the HU IF you use a PAC OEM-1.

Also, if you have steering wheel controls, PAC makes an adapter that will allow your steering wheel controls to work as well as long as the aftermarket HU has a remote. www.go2pac.com

You can find a lot of these questions answered over at www.ls1.com in the Electronics Forum under the FAQ thread at the top of the forum.

If someone wants a PAC OEM-1 I have one I will sell cheap. I bought it for my Suburban and didn't end up needing it.

I know someone mentioned this but PAC sells an adapter so you can use the steering wheel controls.

Now heres my rant. I called PAC about this OEM-1 thing and they told me I had to have it for my Suburban. To make a long story short I installed it, it didn't work right for my application, so I removed it. It works fine without it. I called them and told them they had given me misinformation and that my vehicle did not require this thing so I wanted my money back. They said I was SOL cause they weren't going to take it back after it being opened. Even though they understood the logic that it was their fault I bought this thing at all, they didn't care, said it wasn't their fault that I didn't need it and they would not take it back.

Moral of the story, I don't like PAC. If you can find someone else to buy the steering wheel control from I would.

Stearing Wheel Controls

You can get your steering wheel controls to work with this $75 box that you connect your steering controls to. It costs about $75 and I have only seen it in local specialty shops. I believe it sends the button hits through IR.

Thanks

good luck.
not true. I called crutchfield to order my HU and they asked if it was Monsoon or not. I asked if they had a wiring harness that would leave all the stock wires in-place, bypass the monsoon amp, and let the HU amp control everything......and they did. Diagrams and everything. Really easy install. almost no wire cutting.

Crutchfield sent me a bypass harness with my HU that let me keep all the stock wires (almost no cutting), and keep the stock amp where it is. So, its just sitting there unpowered until (if) I decide to hook it back up, I can put everything COMPLETELY back to stock in no time.

They sent it for free. I don't know if they sell it by itself. Just call and ask. Tell them exactly what you have and what you are looking for, and they should be able to help you.

I replaced my monsoon with an eclipse deck and it popped like crazy, when i hit the preset buttons on the radio, remote, etc. Everyone else seems to have no problems. I had to go buy some sort of converter because the amp in the radio was interferring with the monsoon amp.

I believe the best way to go is to replace the whole Monsoon system. Those speakers that GM puts in are worth about $40.00. I'm replacing the head unit with an Alpine IVA-D900 dvd multi-media center, the speakers are going for JL Audio XR650CSI and XR650CXI's and I'm adding a JL Audio 10W6 sub with JL Audio 500/1 mono amp and 300/4-channel amp. This will make the Monsoon sound like a cheap little am radio.
