Question monsoon stereo...can you replace only the head unit?

have any of you run into trouble just changing out the stock cdplayer for an aftermarket? i'd like to keep the sound of the monsoon but i have an aftermarket cdplayer from my last car. i was just wondering if everything would match up. i figured i'd just wire the the two rear speakers and the two middle speaker together so it's like a 4 speaker connection.
anyone?

Hmm.

I have the stock monsoon system, with an aftermarket headunit.

But I just bought a wiring harness, to make my life simpler.

To answer your question however, yes it should work, because I believe the speakers are wired to the POS Monsoon amp, then wired to your HU.

You will probably get a better result posting this in the Car Audio Forum, but I hope this helps ya.

yes you can and yes it will work but no you should not wire it up like you are trying.... your head unit might not handle the impedence drop by tieing you 2 speakers together. becides it runs throught an amp you might wnat to go to a stereo shop and get the right parts like the second guy did

SpecForceZ28, where did you get your harness and for how much?

Schismblade, did you also buy a wiring harness for this?

since aftermarket headunits are internally amplified and the stock monsoon speakers are individually amplified (am i wrong?) wouldn't that screw things up?

I do wanna say you have the old system and i do not know too much on that I dont think you can put in a head unit without changing the speakers... i could be wrong on both counts I am not sure when they put the new system in i think 98 when they changed style....

sorry but if you dont find out by tomorrow I can ask a friend that installs in a stereo shop

I believe they DID change it in 98.

I bought my headunit from www.crutchfield.com I specified my system, and they sent me all the right harnesses n stuff.

you have a 97. i have a 99. i don't know if our systems are different, but... (i thought 97 and older had the bose???)

i put an aftermarket deck in leaving everything else the same, running the amplified deck signal through the delco stock amp. sounded kinda crappy. so, (you may not want to hear this) i gutted the whole stock system and started from scratch. pulled the stock amp out, ran new speaker wire to ALL speakers from the new deck. installed an aftermarket amp to power the rear 4" tweets. two front door speaks and back seat speaks are powered from the deck.

i guess you could just change the deck, but i didn't like the way it sounded. it got distorted at high volume levels. if you want to go this route, you can buy the wiring harness at any car stereo shop.

i tried to get a hold of monsoon directly to get a wiring diagram, but they wouldn't give me anything, said it's proprietary information. even crutchfield doesn't have any info on the monsoon system. if you look closely at the crutchfield catalog, you will notice that they only have installation kits for the 98-02 non-monsoon systems...

good luck.

mkent,

I bought my wiring harness at Best Buy for around $10.

However my steering wheel radio controls are no longer functional

I switched out mine and all's well. No amplification troubles. I get plenty of power to the speakers. My steering controls are non-functional now too, and the harness needed to make them functional again is $100.
