Mid Bass Problems

I have a set of CDT Audio 642 3 way components power by an mtx 4244 i beleive its a 4 way amp i have bridged for 200 rms x 2. I have the gain more then half way down and when i turn the volume up the woofers peak out and it sounds like crap. Any suggestions to what is the problem? They say they can take 170 rms.

Thanks for the help.

Sounds like clipping to me. The guy above me is right. Just back them off to around 1/8 of the Gain. 3/4 Unit power is usually a good estimate of full volume, as loud as you'll ever put it. With that much wattage you should be just fine with the gains set pretty freaking low. Mine are all they way down in my setup as they only accept a 4V output and my HU supplies that. I would back them off more, but I can't .

Also, the more bass you send to those small of speakers, the more distortion you will have. That amp should have a built in crossover. Set it in High Pass and adjust it to where it sounds best for you. Let the sub(s) take care of the bass. I don't have any bass running to my Pioneer 6.75's and I'm running twice as much power to them than what they are rated at. They have held up great for 2 years of very loud playing. And that higher power keeps the signal "clean" too.

Good luck.

Good lord, I forgot to mention that all together. Some things I guess I take for granted. Try running them around 70Hz if you have a 24db/octave X-over. 90Hz would be better if it's just a 12db/octave.

thanks for the help everyone, my amp just has a high pass full pass filter for the front 2 channels and a high pass low pass full pass for the back channel theres no other ***** to adjust besides the gains. The only thing i question is that if i put them on high pass, whats the point of the woofers at all then? Thanks for the info everyone.

depends on what's the xover freq of the high pass. Push comes to shove, just put it on full range

you can get a sound analyzer software from download.com, some come with an oscilloscope, plug in a mic, and sit it next to your speakers.

Sounds like you don't have an adjustable crossover on your amp. Run them both on high pass since it's bridged. What amp is it? Most constant crossovers are either 80Hz or 100Hz, either should be okay.

Actually right now I have no speakers in my Z at all . Redoing the setup in the 92 and needed some parts . Hopefully I'll have enough money to get a REALLY nice setup for competing by the end of the summer. I already have the JL 8IB4's for the door, the will be 45Hz at 24db. I could go lower, but the what would my rear sub(s) play ?
