Volume goes up, bass goes down?
Hey guys, I have a factory head unit in my 97 SS, i believe it is the early Monsoon unit, there is a factory 200w amp mounted by the spare tire. I replaced all of the factory speakers with MB quarts, a Soundstream amp and a MTX thunderfoam. I purchased a PAC-OEM 1 to get a signal to the amp. The thing that is happening, is that I get great bass when the volume is at 1/2 or below, and as i turn it up past that, the bass seems to fade out and drop to almost nothing at full volume. I tried turning up the signal presets on the OEM from half to about 3/4 to give the amp more signal, but that didnt help at all. What is causing the bass to fade out at 1/2 volume and up? Is it the factory head unit? What do you guys think can be causing this?

The POS Monsoon system attenuates the bass as you turn up the volume. It's "supposed" to help protect the woofers from blowing when you crank up the volume. It doesn't work very well cuz people are blowing the factory speakers ALL the time.

So you are telling me that the factory head unit is a POS? If I go to a different head unit such as an Alpine, I wont get that bass fade away from 1/2 volume and up? Will I get a better sound from the system overall? Also, will the amp by the spare tire work with the aftermarket head unit? Please let me know, as I am not happy with the way it sounds, and will change the head unit if need be, thanks.

IMHO, when it comes to upgrading the POS Monsoon system, you gotta replace everything or don't even bother.
Your POS Monsoon amp doesn't put out anywhere near it's claimed 200W. That spec is a MAX output figure at probably 10% THD. You'll get much better sound AND reliability with a full after-market setup.

So, you are basically telling me that the Monsoon setup is a POS ? I can sense how much you dislike it LS1 RULZ, and I have to agree with you. Looks like I will be replacing some things and doing some rewiring. Any good places that you can reccomend to start shopping for a head unit, amps and possibly a changer?
