Are head units in our cars interchangeable?

I have a non Bose cd player out of a 97 TA. I was going to put in my car but decided not to because I need the money for a tranny rebuild. Would this cd player hook directly up to any 4th gen without any problems? What about it working with the Bose system? I haven't heard of any problems but I *think I heard that a non Bose cd player won't work in a Bose system. If you can, please fill me in, I would rather not sell it someone and them think I screwed them if there are any problems hooking it up. Thanks
