Hard Wire Radar Detector?

I have a 97 convertible. I'm pretty sure I can figure out the headliner area and the A-Pillar as far as concealing the wire... what I am unsure of is the fuse box area? I see what looks like vacant/spare 1 prong fuse slots on the bottom of the fuse box? maybe they are 3 prong fuse slots? not sure what those are capable of? I am looking to keep the detector on/off with car on off so I can't leave it on accidentally. I have seen the add-a-circuits and fuse splice kits but most of them look like they would not work in the tight fitting camaro fuse box area!

I have an Escort and will get the kit they have.

I am unsure about doing this type of mod

Do I risk blowing anything on that circuit by doing it this way?
Does the wire need to be spread thinner/flatter as opposed to being twisted/rounded?

Where is the best/easiest spot to ground it?

Notice in the picture the open fuse area in the lower left... 1-prong or 3-prong fuse slots?

Any suggestions/images etc.

Mirror wiring tap in? never seen it but would make it much nicer/easier if that was possible!

Thanks!

Re: Hard Wire Radar Detector?

I wouldnt tap into the mirrors

You can use the taps like you are talking about, I personally dont like them because they can stretch the tabs that hold the fuse in place and dont always make a good connection. Make sure that you are on the protected side of the fuse though if you do. i dont know about the other plugs in the fuse panel, if they test switched go ahead but they wont be fused unless you add an inline fuse.

How do you get the cover to stay on with that wire there? you can go behind the dash instead of infront of it like that.

I would just find a wire that is switched with ignition, like: behind the radio, ignition wires next to the steering column....

As for ground: there is a ground point right next to the hood pop lever,or the bar that bolts to either side of the steering column.

Re: Hard Wire Radar Detector?

I didn't do the mod in this pic, this is someone else's mod... but I don't want to do it this way or with a fuse tap... I've read many problems with spreading the fuse slot wide so if you ever remove the fuse tap you will have problems and it could lead to corrosion and replacing the fuse block itself...

I stumbled upon this though

in this thread
https://www.camaroz28.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=756865

I am pretty sure that the same 1/4" spade is already on the wire... so now I can just attach that to the IGN 'open slot' like injuneer's pic and not have to do anything else for the power...just install in like 5 minutes maybe? Not sure if the top of the windshield fabric cover comes off once the convertible top mounts and covers are removed..seems like it should but that piece feels solid like it's glued down? LOL won't really know until I try I guess.

anyway the IGN slot is the one with the orange wire going to it...so I should be good! THX
