a dvd format question
Re: a dvd format question
are you using Nero to burn it to the dvd or Nerovision Express.. they are two different burning formats. If you use Nero Burning Rom. (the program u use to write files to dvd's and cd's) And just write it as an Mpeg-2 file write to the disk, then only players that can effectively read a mpeg 2 can view it and effectively run all functions. The best question I have is.. How long does it take you to burn a Full 4.5gb DVD... If it takes you less than 2.5 to 3 hours.. than you are not doing it right. With Nerovision express, It actually writes a Menu to the disc and gtives it a DVD Encoded Format, so you can use it on anything at all with full functionality. standard burning time is around 3 hours, because it actually re-encodes the mpeg-2 format again into a DVD proprietary format and burns it after it is done. put a store bought DVD into your computer once and explore it.. Most of them will have a rather interesting arrangement...
(Note.. I don't want to hear from anyone out there that it should not take that long to burn a disk.... or that my computer is slow..... neither is true thank you)
But basically just burning the mpeg-2 file to a dvd will not cut it. You actually have to burn it into a DVD-video format. Just like when you put in a cd... the file extentions at the end of the track are .CDS same type of thing with a dvd.

Re: a dvd format question
i've tried it both ways. i have not burned a full 4.7g dvd yet because i want to just get it working so i've been basically using 2-3 files and just keep trying, trying, etc.
as far as burning i've tried burning the discs with the nero burning portion and nerovision express as well as several other programs out there i've downloaded as freeware. it doesn't seem to matter however the one dvd i did burn took almost 3 hours when i tied 14 files.
i can understand what you are saying with nerovision express as it goes through the whole menu process, when it's done yes it works on my onkyo home player perfectly however it will not work on my headunit or my ps2. now the obvious answer is well maybe it's the disc, program or the hardware i'm trying to play the disc on but i can burn/rip a bought dvd no problem using the exact same process and play the dvd on everything i have?
the one question you do bring up though is that i can rip and copy a dvd in a 1/3 the time it would take me to have nerovision take my mpeg2 files, encode them and burn them. which if what you are saying above is true it makes sense however according to most sites once you convert to mpeg2 that is suppose to be dvd compatible? if not what is the correct format then? that is since you say it's converting beyond mpeg2 because maybe for some reason it isn't for me and i could look into that.
do you have nerovision express? does anyone here have it? if your bored someone please try to take two downloaded .wmv files such as music videos or even drag racing cilps and make a properly working dvd that will work on a ps2 or a dvd car headunit if you have it. i'm going insane trying every program under the sun.
my biggest issue is i can get the ps2 and head unit to recognize the menu as well as even play the various files, but it does not do it properly. once the main menu comes up i have to stop the dvd to get the first chapter/track/file to play. then i either have to hold down the fast forward to skip to the next videos or hit stop and play again.
for some reason the menu and mpeg2 files just aren't getting converted into the proper format. i've even tried converting the mpeg2 files directly to a video_ts style file like you would find on a production dvd, it changes nothing.

Re: a dvd format question
I do indeed have nerovision express
it works like a charm every time i use it. I can play them in my car, my home dvd player and in my x-box (don't have a ps2). I have found however some types of dvd's do not work where ohter's do... I generally use the DVD-R not the DVD+R or DVD +/- R. As for the DVD format. yes.. the Mpeg 2 encoding it not technically what the DVD is actually encoded at. since there aer a few more durectories and such for dvd based functions.. at least on all the ones i have gotten.. It can be a real PITA.. another thing i have noticed is not all DVD burners record in the same way.. which can lead to some oddities.. (the old thing of not everything being made equally).
But it can be a DVD Media incompatibility, a DVD burner Bios incompatibility.. and things like that. the thing i would recommend is make sure the Biod Revision and drivers for you DVD Burner are up to date and current.. that is a good start.. After that.. did you actually buy Nero Vision... or did you get the free trial with Nero? they are diferent.. the free trial one acts strange.. at least it did for me.

Re: a dvd format question
the package came with my player. it was an extra $70 or so to have the nero with it. i have used nero in the past with my cd burners which is why i figured it would be good. overall it is good as it does copy my dvds. the things i don't get as i pointed out earlier is that i can copy and burn a dvd and make it play in anything so the versions and everything i have should be good. i just can't format my own style dvd to work on in my car, it does work on my home dvd player though.
Re: a dvd format question
Have you got all the updates for Nero? I recall seeing something on Nero's site about the Nero packaged with a burner does not have all the functions the retail version has.
