Components in front, coaxials in back???
Components in front, coaxials in back???
I am trying to learn what I need to buy to completly overhaul my stock stereo. I already replaced the factory tape player with a Kenwood cd reciever. My Trans Am is equipped with the 10 speaker system.
So, when I replace the front 6 1/2s, I should replace these with component speakers?
Now my next question regards the back seat speakers. I have been told you can put 8s in that location, but most people do 6.5s. Now if I was to do 6 1/2s, I would you coaxial 6 1/2s, correct?
I listen to mostly rock, so would it be advantageous to use good set of coaxial 6 1/2s in the back seat, or should I use some 8s? I want more crisp, clear sound not a ton of bass.

yes 6.5" components in the front and 6.5 coaxils in the back but the back speakers are actually 6.75" but 6.5" ones will fit with a little modification...I personally wouldnt put 8s in the back.....altho I suppose it could be a good idea if your not going to have subs.....since u dont need back speakers anyway.
DONT put regular 6.5s in the back, you will get LESS BASS and WORSE SOUND....
First question? have you removed the factory amp, or is that still installed???
Assuming its still installed get a nice pair of 6.5 subs as I mentioned in the other post such as the JL 6w0s or Rockford RFP4406. This is only if the factory amp is still connetced, running those off deck power would not be the best idea...

Where is the factory amp located? I have only removed the factory tape deck. Is there a door code specifying that you have the 10 speaker setup from the factory?
I have a 300 watt Alpine amp to install, but I want to do the complete install all at one time. This will compose of a seperate amp to power the front/rear 6.5s and a JL 10' speaker in the rear powered by the 300 watt Alpine amp I have. does this sound like a decent setup? I don't want anything that will win awards, just something that sounds good.
What is the best, moderately priced set of 6.5 components in the 100 to 200 dollar range?
What is the best, moderately priced set of 6.5 coaxials or subs to use in the rear seat location?
What is a good amp to power all these front speakers, all the 6.5s?
Will the 300watt, 2 channel Alpine amp (MRV-T505) be sufficient to power the JL 10W3?
Thanks

The factory amp is located very close to the spare tire. It's just a small black box. But sounds to me like you are planning to scrap the entire system anyways and replace with aftermarket. In that case, remove EVERYTHING audio related from the car. Toss all that cr@p in the trash. I recommend the Focal 165V components. If those are a little too expensive, Focal makes a cheaper line. The 165A's. Others in that range would be the Infinity Perfect's or the Alpine Type-R's. For the rear, the Kicker RMB6 or the Adire Audio Koda. As for an amp to power these four speakers...... since you already have an Alpine, you MUST buy another one to match!
lol Sorry, just a pet peeve of mine.
But I think the T505 is a couple of years old. The newer V12 line, looks different then the V12 you have. Don't think they make any like that anymore.
just look for a 4-channel amp that outputs atleast 50WRMSx4@4ohms. And power handling is completely dependant on the box, but 300WRMS should be plenty for the W3.
Thank you so much. That is what I was needing to see. Exactly what kind of power I need going to what.
I keep hearing that these Focals are pretty damn good. Better than MB Quart?
Anyone else have any other different kind of advice regarding what speakers to use.
And also, is that what is most desireable to not run anything off the headunit? If I go this route, all speakers will be running off amps.

Alright, I think that the Focal 165v seems in my price range. I was wanting to stay under 200, but for 209 I don't think I can pass it up. Would these be the consensus best pick for me to go with?
And you said to get a 4 channel (Alpine
) amp that is
50W RMS X 4 @ 4ohms, so would this amp be okay:
Alpine MRV-F450 5/4/3/2
The description says that it will do: 50 Watts X 4 and 200 X 1 amplifiers. But I would read into this basically powering the front four speakers @ 50watts and then powering the rear sub by 200 watts to that 1 channel. So, this is probably a little too much amp since I already have the 300W amp to power my sub, correct? I am learning a ton here guys, and I appreciate all your advice.

All head units are measured in peak power. So your 50x4 head unit actually only outputs about 20WRMS. So a 50WRMSx4 amp will be a great improvement. As far as the MB Quart vs. Focal.....it's a matter of opinion. I suggest going to your local audio shop and listening to as many sets as you can......and then turn around and buy them off the internet!!! HAHAHAHAHA!
Yeah, guess I'm a d!ck. But until they can offer products that aren't TWICE THE PRICE as off the internet......
