Why would they go "up market" in a "down economy?"

Not to mention the current Aveo outsells the Golf/Rabbit/GTI/whatever else it can be called. Combined.

The current Aveo is such a miserably crappy car it makes my Aura feel like a flagship luxury car. Are we sure the new one is going to be such a huge improvement that you could put it beside a VW GTI and not laugh? The GTI is a seriously impressive machine.

Because small cars have very small margins..and it's the only way to build a profitable business case. Ford's business plan for the Fiesta centers around getting people to pay premium money for it since it is made in the US. If I remember right the Fiesta costs the same if not more than Focus. GM likely loses money on every Cobalt and Aveo it sells.

I don't know if it will be competitive with a GTI, but I am confident it will be a significant and marked improvement over the current car and will probably compete fine with the Fit (a pretty nice car) and Yaris (a car I find almost as horrible as the current Aveo).

Hecho in Mexico.

The current Focus starts at $15,995 and I'd expect the upcoming new Focus to be a bit more. Fiesta starts at $13,320.

Lutz said that Cobalt was profitable back around 2007 or so. If it was then, surely it is now considering the minimal changes in its life cycle.

The Aveo has been around since 2002 and has only had a couple of minor upgrades. If it's not amortized by now, Daewoo did something WAY wrong.

What about the Suzuki SX4? AWD, and has a range of $16-$19k. Isn't that the only AWD car at that price range?

Duly noted about the Malibu. They need a sport version that German car lovers would love to test against their A4's.

Perhaps because only 700 units were available?

High sales don't equal the quality of the machine. If it did the Camry would be the highest quality machine in the US. Do you honestly think it is?

Aveos are pos. I inspect at least 5 Aveos each month and all of them have serious quality problems. However, you get what you pay for.

The current GTI is a very good car and has decades of history backing it.

The Aveo was a GM/Daewoo venture resulting IMHO in a subpar subcompact much like a Hyundai Excel from the mid 1980's. I.e. a piece of ****.
Just for grins I walked into the local VW dealer in PR and looked at the sticker for a 2009 GTI.... 42,500.00 US cocos my friend.

I like them, but am fearful of their quality. No way I would pay so much money for a little hatch.

What was on this car to make it so expensive? Ive been pricing 2010 GTI's and with almost every option including the DSG trans which I did not select its hard to reach $35K . My combo had manual trans , sunroof , Nav , bi-xenon hid's , 18" wheels and a few other must haves for me and was sitting right around $29,000 . Unlike alot of other small cars though , the GTI feels like the money it costs . For someone who really wants a premium small car and not justifying price based on the size or segment of the car , thats whats important .

I've owned two VW's, a Corrado and a Passat. I agree about the premium feel. God help you if they break though.
