Will Aveo RS become a hot hatch like the VW GTI?

I sure hope so.

Rumors are that the Aveo RS will be a boxy hatchback with a body kit, large wheels, and various performance modifications -including (rumor has it) a turbo motor.

Sounds like fun.

Here's some twitter tweets:

From Mike Simcoe, head Chevy designer:" Next gen Aveo is no longer an econobox. It's a performance car."

Next gen Aveo just unveiled! Larger than current Aveo and definitely more dynamic design. Hot car! ^AD

You'll see the Aveo RS in January... Better wheel-to-well, body kit... Graaah! It's *gorgeous!*

I don't think so... The heritage of the car is crap, and will take a bit to shake that off.

VW has what 30 years of heritage?

I would like to see something domestic dethrone the GTI, granted a one year wonder isn't going to do it, but a prolonged assault with continual improvment might just do the trick.

Not that I don't have faith in the NEW GM, but I think they're making a big mistake carrying on the Aveo name if they want respect for their small car, especially in a performance arena.

The current GTI is a very good car and has decades of history backing it.

The Aveo was a GM/Daewoo venture resulting IMHO in a subpar subcompact much like a Hyundai Excel from the mid 1980's. I.e. a piece of ****.

Of course, it's wishful thinking that Chevy's new hatch in RS form can be as cool as a GTI. And as 90 Z28SS mentioned, we've heard the overhype before.

Still, I'm looking forward to checking it out. For one, I'm glad they're calling it RS. If I were to see "SS" on one more car, I think I'd vomit.
For another, everyone who's actually seen the car seems to have a positive comment. The interior looks pretty decent for a cheap car too.
Here's a pic:

As far as keeping the name, well Aveo is a global brand with some pretty serious inroads in eastern Europe, maybe it's wise to build on that. Plus I'm kind of tired of Chevy conjuring up new names with every redesign - hoping people forget about the last model. Let's stick with something and keep making it better for a change. A nice wheel/tire combo, a well balance chassis, may a turbo motor and easy price of admission is a good start.

If it does then the little car will have done a helluva job overcoming it's namesake.

edit........ Am I seeing this correct that VW sold just under 800 GTi's in November and 6700 for the year?
