What do we know about the LS4 V8?

I don't care as long as they don't reuse Z28

diffrent years can allow diffrent engine combos.
for example, one year engine LT1 could be a carbed big block... and then years from then, that LT1 could be a fuel injected small block.

these are just some of the GM engine RPOs that i had on this PC. not accurate for anything other then 82-92. and even then there might be some conflicts.

Define "special"
anyhoo... im just waiting for the genIII motors to enter the same phase as the SBC and other motors.... where there is no "this part gives X power" BS.... because theres more then one variant of the engine. it should be fun to watch.
Special is an engine code that enthusiats still talk about 30 years later
i.e. L-88, L-89, L-78, LT-1, LS-5, LS-6, ZL-1, LT-5...
By my rough calculations, there are approx. 6,700 2 letter/1 number combinations...that should be enough to allow removal of approximately 12 combinations as "historically unavailable"
like some sports teams do w/ jersey numbers. The Dallas Cowboys haven't technically retired any numbers per se, but certain numbers are "unavailable" like...12, 8, 22 I'm sure. Why 88 and 33 aren't included I don't know.
But even if they can't do that...at least TRY to not put a code of what was once a 400hp big block onto a 1.6L 4 banger. Try to keep it like what they did w/ the LT-1/LT1 and LS-6/LS6...that is fine w/ me
And for historical reference, the original LS-4 was a 454 decended from the LS-5, only w/ some loss of compression and addition of some smog equipment I believe.

they have to allow for EVERY RPO for EVERY car. and since engines for the most part keep the same RPO between car models, they cant share them.
and every engine RPO as far as i know starts with L.
thats only 1296 combos for engines worldwide across most GM platforms.

you're right. brain fart.
the LT1 came out in 1970(same year that they stopped making the 327)
it was suppost to be 370hp, 380-lb-ft (in the vette.. 360/360 in the camaro)... solid cam... 11:1 compression.
the next year they modded it for unleaded... so they dropped the compression to 9:1 (or 9.5. i forget.) it went to somthing like 320 or 330hp.. either way, it was slower. they dropped it the following year (72)

EDIT: Doh! Just realized you had said big block and small block, which is probably what he was correcting. So it is just my point that the original was hyphenated, while the '92 Vette (and '93 F-car) engine was not.

i said big block, its a small block.. you did just bring up a lil fake piece of info though.
they are RPO codes. there are no hyphens. however, to keep people from being confused, its pretty common to label the old motor LT-1 and the new one LT1.
technicly, the RPO is and always will be LT1... they're just 3 letter RPO codes.
