Ummmm.....about weight....
Re: Ummmm.....about weight....
Weight wouldn't be as big an issue if GM decide on LS3 or LS7 for Camaro. Having said that, I don't think you could definitely say if it weighs over 3600lbs, I'm not buying. You would have to have a drive and consider how the car best suits your needs. Weight is mostly a problem if racing... although it does sting a bit at the bowser as well.

If GM can can build a Camaro that is 3500lbs. the LS2 will have no problem kicking the crap out of the 6.1L Challenger.
Re: Ummmm.....about weight....
My '96 weighed in at 3500lbs with a full tank. I'd like to at least see that weight again, but I won't be surprised if it's around 3,600.
I can't say that I wouldn't get a Camaro over 3,600, but I'd have second thoughts. It really depends on what the final package is like.

Re: Ummmm.....about weight....
Really, we should've decided if this was with or without options. They add quite a bit of heft.
Even so, I feel the 4ths were a tad bloated compared to the 3rds. But really, I'd ideally like a 3300 base car, and with the options (on a coupe, not a vert) weighing around 3500. My fully loaded Z feels a tad heavy so really, if it's any heavier, you've lost me. I'll stick with a C5 or 3rd and 4th gen Z28s.

Re: Ummmm.....about weight....
When you consider all the "conveniences" that most consumers (maybe not us) expect in a modern vehicle, plus pending safety regs, I don't think we're going to see anything south of 3700 lbs.

Also, short of us hardcore enthusiasts, im pretty sure just about no one looks at weight as a determining factor. Heck, most people have no idea what cars weigh and they dont care either, as long as they drive nice and do what they are supposed to do.

3700 lbs max without driver (since this car wil have IRS). If this means I need to order a more minimalist car, then so be it; anything over 3700 is unnaceptable to me.
By way of example this would have to include:
A/C
power driver seat,
power mirrors,
remote keyless power locks (both doors and trunk)
Stereo with in dash single CD player.
No t-tops or targa roof... i.e. must be an available hardtop.
Traction control that can be turned off - whatever that turns out to be.
Manual six speed trans.
These are all pretty standard features... hopefully options will be flexible so that people who want all the toys can have 'em while those of us that want more of a stripper can have their fun too.
4100 lbs for the Challenger is utterly ridiculous. Gains made in power (and fuel econmoy), are being pissed away with a bloated curb weight. Not to mentioned agility is further compromised. Why not just buy a friggin' truck instead?

Re: Ummmm.....about weight....
I don't want to see a Camaro over 3,500 lbs, past that point it might as well be a Chevelle...When I think Camaro I don't think of a near 2 ton pig...I would really like to see it under 3,300 but it seems that won't happen. As was already said though, the heavier it gets, the less interest I have in one
Re: Ummmm.....about weight....
I would expect 3700lbs or so.
Remember something about that added 25-50lbs people are talking about, for an IRS vs a solid axle. That is "assuming" that both axles have the same strength. If you want this IRS to be significantly stronger than that weak noodle axle the 4th gens had, then it is going to weigh more than 25-50lbs more. If you want a stiffer body structure than a 4th gen, then it is going to weigh more. If you want it to meet or exceed crash standards for 2010 and beyond, it is going to weigh more. If you want more equipment standard, and optional, then it is going to weigh more. Also, remember that more power requires heavier components to support it.
Thus, anyone who thinks it can weigh the same or less than a 4th gen is only fooling themselves. Yes methods can be used to reduce weight. However, I don't think that anyone wants a base V8 Camaro to cost $40K.
