Parking Feud

Some U.S. Marines say they were surprised by the decision made by Detroit auto workers about parking. It all started with the cars some Marines drove, and what was on them.

The words that have some U.S. Marines in shock came from the man in charge of security at the UAW Solidarity House, on Jefferson in Detroit. For a number of years now, dozens of Marine reservists have been thankful to park in the UAW’s lot for weekend training with no problem at all - until now.

Marines at nearby Marine Corps Reserve Center say on Tuesday morning, the director of security at the UAW told them that while they support the troops, Marines driving foreign vehicles or sporting a President George Bush bumper sticker were no longer welcome to park there.

U.S. Marine Lt. Col. Joe Rutledge told Action News, "We received a phone call from the UAW, who support us by letting us park down at their facility. They called and said they weren’t going to allow or they would turn away some vehicles."

A spokesman for the UAW released a statement to Action News which reads:

"While reservists certainly have the right to drive non-union made vehicles and display bumper stickers touting the most anti-worker, anti-union president since the 1920s, that doesn’t mean they have the right to park in a lot owned by members of the UAW."

As U.S. Marine Corps Capt. Lee Cooper explained, "We’re very appreciative, but on the other hand, it’s kind of discriminating between, let’s say a lance corporal going through college can only afford a 15-year-old vehicle and it happens to be a Nissan."

if one can't park there, than the others marines should want to park there anyways. so i guess someone saw a marine driving a toyota and got mad? why would you get mad over that? i can not find any sense in it.

Re: UAW kicks out Marines with foreign cars.

instead of banning the Marines driving 15yo beat up POS foreign cars, they should sponser some of them with new(er) american makes. instead of being a part of the solution, the UAW is once again part of the problem. I really have no respoct for this organization whatsoever especially with them pulling stunts like this. I don't know what they are hoping to accoumplish or what their goal and purpose is, but they really come off as greedy and stuck-up bunch of *******s. where they trying incite patriotism with this? someone really needs to put these self-rightious idiots "in their place."

Yep. Can they even comprehend how pathetic and assinine they look. They publically took something away from US Marines during a time of war - that's great PR. Self-rightiousness is exactly the right word for them. You can see it in every one of their actions. And why? Because they build cars less efficiently than the Japanese for better pay than anyone else doing their job in the world? What makes them think they have the right to demand anything of a US Marine?

Re: UAW kicks out Marines with foreign cars.

Just listen to the rehearsed pablum that this UAW spokesman spews.

The US Marine Lt Col, seems too professional and smart to say this ....but if he were trained at the same UAW indoctrination camp, as the above UAW spokesperson - he might say:

"While the UAW leadership certainly have the right to be ignorant a$$h0le$ and steal money from their membership in order to further their own socialist political agenda since the 1970's, that doesn't mean they have the right to be defended by the blood and honor owned by the members of the USMC."

Let the Marines park, you stupid dip$h!t$ !!!!!!!!!!!

My dad was a doctor for GM a few years ago and he drove an Accord. He parked in the worker lot at the factory and the union people gave him hell. He told them to shove it up their ^55es and kept parking there. It was my dad's beater car so he couldve cared less if anyone messed with it.

Re: UAW kicks out Marines with foreign cars.

First, I am a UAW member, Local 402....and while I don't completely agree with what the "man in charge of security" there said, I understand...
Those vehicles represent lost jobs, and they don't want to be seen as helping people that are helping their competition. And certainly I believe it was more the fact they support this POS president, who not only supports unfair trade agreements but wants to extend them to Indonesia, opening up the truck market to being bombarded by cheap import trucks. And most of us do not believe in the reasons behind this war, but do support those in harms way...we still fly, POW/MIA flags all through our plant, from the last questionable war...
Anyways just remember who it comes from:
came from the man in charge of security at the UAW Solidarity House, on Jefferson in Detroit
.
And there are people at UAW factories such as mine who drive Foreign vehicles every day, who only get an occasional ribbing...

Will that be only for children of veterans who vote Democrat and never owned a foreign car?

Another quote:
"We do not think it is unreasonable to expect our guests to practice the simple principle of not insulting their host," the UAW statement said."
I think their dubious insult is dwarfed by yours, UAW tools. Denying U. S. Marines who at any moment may be called to defend our country use of your parking lot based on the car they drive or their political affiliation? Shame on you. And you have the ***** to claim that you "support our troops"? Very sincere.

as much as you may or may not agree with it, if they own the parking lot, they can chose to regulate it however they feel.

Re: UAW kicks out Marines with foreign cars.

And unions wonder why they have such a bad public image

I remember years ago when employees who parked foreign cars at UAW plants would have them vandalized. That hasn't happened much for about 20 years and foreign cars are now loosely tolerated. So are we to conclude that if you're a union member you're allowed to bring a foreign car onto UAW property, but if you're a US Marine defending the country and driving a Toyota, you're persona non grata?
