Trademark for Chevelle

So GM filed a trademark for Chevelle on 4 Dec 2012. Four different ones actually. One of them is for auto badges and decals.

Probably just renewing to keep the names secure but given the timing you can't help but wonder.

Let the speculation begin.

Re: Trademark for Chevelle

If they're already calling the new Chevy RWD sedan something as yawn-inducing as 'SS' I wouldn't read too much into it.

It'd be nice if the new "SS" was called a chevelle.

What if the production version of the Code 130R is called Chevelle?

Doesn't fit with the history of the model name. Chevelle was a mid size, Code 130R is a compact. I really think it is going to be the actual name for the "SS" and GM wanted to have a big, surprise unveiling at Daytona.

I've been saying it all along... I think it will be called the Chevelle. I think it will fit the car. Maybe a 2 door version will be offered too

I would think a production version of a RWD vehicle the size of 130R would be Camaro.

Actually Alpha (i.e. Code 130R) is roughly the same size as the Malibu, which is considered a mid size sedan by today's standards.

If they're going to build a family of Alpha based Chevrolets (coupes, sedans and wagons) inspired by the Code 130R, Chevelle fits better than any other "historical" name in the Chevrolet family.

Camaro and CTS will be on Alpha+, which is a slightly stretched version compared to the one used on the Code 130R.

Re: Trademark for Chevelle

Chevelle would fit more as a 2 door version of the SS rather than undercutting the size of a Alpha based Camaro.

Really the current 5th Gen Camaro is more muscle car sized and better as a Chevelle. Camaro "should" be more Code 130R sized and I hope that happens in 6th Gen.

While I agree, that ship has sailed. Everyone remembers the 2-door Chevelles from the 60s and early 70s, however they always forget more 4-doors were actually sold. (Try to buy a used late 60s Chevelle today, most of the ones you find have 4-doors. There's a reason for this.)

There isn't going to be a 2-door version of the SS. It would compete directly against Camaro. Camaro is moving to Alpha+, which won't be too much smaller than the Zeta version. It may (or may not) be lighter.

If GM can get the cost down, Alpha would make a great platform for an entry level family of coupes, sedans and wagons. And based on actual history (not remembered history), the Chevelle name would be a good fit. (However, I am currently skeptical that it will actually get that name, if and when it happens.)

Re: Trademark for Chevelle

It's fun to speculate, but in this instance don't read too much into this.

All car manufacturers are trademarking names of cars long gone. Even if there is no plans whatsoever currently on the table to bring them back. It all dates from Ford losing "GT-40" and nearly losing "Cobra". More recent years, Chrysler's legal department has to spend time trying to regain 'Cuda and "Barracuda".

About 4 years ago, someone attempted to trademark the "Plymouth" logo.

Ford still owns the "Thunderbird" name, and in fact was one of the things they put up for collateral when they mortgaged the entire company some years ago.

Point: Sure, the Chevelle name can show up on just about anything (whether its a performance car, a pedestrian family sedan, or a redesigned Chevy Volt). But there are no cars in the pipline that GM might be developing where someone is going to say "Hey, lets save the Chevelle name for this".
