New Chevelle NOT likely!

I have done some snooping and am seriously think that all the Chevelle rumors are nothing but smoke and mirrors for something else GM doesn't want to say they are working on (a certain sports coupe they can't refer to in public). First off we know GM is working on a new Monte Carlo and a a Camaro replacement...throw Chevelle in the mix....and that leave three mixsized coupes which just won't happen. What I do see is Chevy having mid sized counterparts to the RWD upcoming VE series based Grand Prix and GTO. The VE series is a mix of current Holden V-Series and Sigma...more V-Series though. Those will most likely be the Impala and Monte Carlo. The Monte Carlo's slot is where they could put the Chevelle name on a car, but i really doubt they will....especially with the name recognition and NASCAR and all. Then you have the Camaro replacement which will be built on the same platform...only smaller and likely cheaper (lets call it VE-Lite)....this definatly wouldn't keep in the Chevelle's heritage. Also Camaro is the 3rd most recognizable name in GM's whole product portfolio...so it would get the nod over Chevelle from a marketing standpoint. Also something of note...if they build the smaller Camaro version (VE-LITE?) which would have enough difference in size to keep it way from the Monte Carlo it opens the door for a new Firebird

My personal thoughts on a Chevelle comback were that the only way I could see it happening is if it replaced Monte Carlo...

Thanks Branden, seems like the info is kind of in line with what we have been hearing from "sources" in the recent past. It would have been nice to actually hear some solid plans instead of blind faith but I guess everything has it's reasons...

Good to hear about the VE-Lite platform but it would have been really COOL if the Camaro/Monte and Chevelle prowled the streets with the GTO/Vette/Mustang and the Hemi powered RWD machine from DC. things are looking good for the future...

PS
First off we know GM is working on a new Monte Carlo and a a Camaro replacement...
any reliable sources or just speculation?? (you don't have to be too open about it but just to satisfy my own curiosity since GM didn't really send off the Camaro as a legend but actually kind of quietly let it die sort of like a limping horse in the twilight.

I can tell you that Holden will probably have 3 different size versions of the VE platform. 2 for sure, 3rd is a maybe as of right now. The mid-size platform will be for the commodore/monaro etc, the long platform is for the statesman/wagon/ute and the maybe is the 'Torana'. That would be smaller than the commodore/monaro platform, that could be your VE-lite. It is not confirmed other than the CEO of Holden has said he wants it, as it would fill a big market gap. That would be my guess as to what the Camaro could be based on.

The Monte will be back for sure RWD....the Camaro is just waiting on funding and isn't looking good near term..like not in the next 3 years....it is pretty much last inline for money since there is so much stuff in the car line for GM to fix...that is from a very reliable source....the rest is putting the pieces of bits of information togethor. I am 80% confident we will not see a new Chevelle, but things seem to chage daily at GM.

This is just my opinion, I have no sources to document, and not sure if you do, but...

I don't see another Grand Prix coupe. That's the GTO.

Here's what I see for both lineups:
2006+

Cavalier/Sunfire - sedan only
Camaro/Firebird - costs come down, this is GM's entry-level coupe, with the performance in the higher models (Z28/T/A)
Monte - low-volume coupe
Chevelle/GTO - high volume coupe version of new Impala/GP

It could work...

I though GM announced a few weeks ago that the Cavalier was dead after 2004.

Last I heard the caviler was going to lumber on as the sedan and the Sunfire was going to take over the coupe end of the segment? Seems as though thats whats going on right now but I really haven't heard any long term projections I guess.

Cavalier is dead after 2004... but they have a Delta-based replacement gearing up at Lordtown Assembly, where the current Cavalier and Sunfire are assembled.

It is 99% certain that the new Delta-based cavalier replacement will have a new name, but that name has not been decided/announced yet.

If what you say is true, GM America will have 4 (5 if you include subaru) RWD platforms with SIgma and VE having different size's for at least a total 6 RWD choices

1. Y body, Corvette/XLR
2. VE, Monte/GTO/Grand Prix/Impala> Ute???
3. Sigma, CTS/DTS and many other caddys
4. ?????, Solstice, Bengal, Sky, Camaro???

Its all great by me but it seems a little far fetched.

That was my main jist, I didn't remember the platform name.

Here is how I see GM's RWD Lineups...

Y-body=XLR/C6
Tube Chassis= (whatever it's called)=Solstice,Sky,Bengal
VE Based Sigma= Grand Prix/GTO, Monte Carlo/Impala, possibly some Buicks
VE-Lite=Camaro/possibly Firebird, Holden is developing this supposedly so they will probaly have the lead version.
Sigma=Cadillac and maybe some Buicks.
