Taking their under-delivered fuel mileage, just a side argument about hybrids...
The only thing that I can 100% agree on is that they reduce pollution coming out of the car exhaust. There are a number of other factors that must be taken into consideration if pollution is of concern.
Increased pollution in making the batteries (acid, plastics, etc...)
Maintenance and new equipment to be purchased as a result of battery servicing/maintenance at the dealership.
Disposing of batteries. I'm sure parts are recycleable, but what isn't and how will it be disposed?
A similar argument is made for keeping street cars in Toronto - they run on electricity and produce zero pollution. However, they are a great cause of congestion and traffic through most of downtown and downtown west. Switching to buses would have reduced that congestion drastically. So, while the street cars do produce next to no emissions, what is the final cost? Why don't we take into consideration idling time of dozens of vehicles stuck behind them?
