I read it too, but don't remember why he'd want to disassociate himself from the 4th gen. Please refresh our memories.

As Z284ever pointed out, why stop at dropping "trim" level names like "SS" and "Z28" and not drop "Camaro" altogether?
Yes we were talking about "Camaro"... but "SS" means so much more than "Camaro" and has been reborn by GM as Chevrolet's top-of-the-line performance models.
While back in 1961, "SS" was exactly that... a "trim" level; by the time "Camaro" debuted in 1967, "SS" was a performance package on top of the base "Camaro". "Z/28" was design as a race specific model for SCCA T/A racing. So to say "Z/28" is specifically a "trim" level is a slap in the face at it's racing heritage.

But you're ignoring my point, which had nothing to do with semantics. I used "trim level or option" as a catch-all phrase to disinguish SS, Z28, GT, and Z06 from the model names to which they are attached (Camaro, Mustang, and Corvette, respectively) so I could express a greater point--namely, that the model names are more fundamental.
The point is axiomatic: The name Camaro is sine qua non to Camaro: a car with another name is not a Camaro. However, a Camaro that is not a Z28 or an SS is still a Camaro. QED.

You should answer the corollary of your rhetorical question--i.e., why should the name Camaro be dropped if SS or Z28 aren't available? Why shouldn't GM develop a new RPO?

They mean that the names mean so much to the car that dropping the designations would be like dropping the name Camaro. 2 names should always stay with the Camaro and that is Z28 and RS because they are both Camaro specific. SS is on everything.
Z28 belongs at the top!! Whether it's an IROC-Z28, a Z28/SS, a Z28/RS, a SLP Z28, a Sport Coupe Z28, a Z28/ZL1, I don't care how you do it, Z28 is the CAMARO top model.

And yeah, making the lower cars look like the top or making the Z28 look like a lower model was wrong.
I think you worded the poll wrong Z284. I woulda done it like dis:
The 5th gen Camaro SS should....
-Be dropped completely.
-Kept as it is.
-Be the "luxury" Camaro with all the options.
-Be the straightline focused drag car.
And the bonus
-Be the Z28's b***h this time.

As far as my own purchases, I prefer low keyed "sleepers", and have no problem with a Z28 that's Camaro's version of the old Mustang 5.0 (which as we know, were lighter and quicker than the GTs
).But I also am aware that the SS name is generic Chevrolet, while Z28 is strictly historic Camaro and is far more special to the line than the SS (which was only around 14 of 35 years to Z28's 32 and a half).
If Z28 were to continue as a cheaper, sleeper SS, then that's fine with me. But I think all this emphasis on the SS at the expense of the Z28 that seems to be comming from Chevy & the Camaro guys there isn't exactly confidence inspiring to me.

However while a Z/28 is always a Camaro... an SS can be many cars, and now thanks to GM it can even be a truck!

For someone who says he doesn't care one way or another.....you sure have this Z/28 (oops..I said that name), thing nailed.
