I still think SS and yes that includes Super Sport, is a great brand that only Chevy can claim. It has a lot of heritage and found memories. It's still relevant if done right.

IMO the key to SS is actual performance upgrade. And to me that means engine!
Chevy has done it right with the latest Cobalt, Trailblazer and now Camaro. In those models the SS not only offers much better performance but does it with a more powerful or different engine only offered in the SS. That keeps the SS special and assures that the performance is better. That's good for Chevy, SS and the consumer willing to pay the premium to get it.
That really seems to be the formula used by AMG, SVT, SRT and M.

The '67 Impala SS with a 327 2bbl and Powerslide is what an SS should be!

Z off road super trucks.
Z bad boy vettes.
Z bad boy Camaro's.

That is all they need and they need to be Z's.

Forget SS, it just ain't the same anymore.

This from a rabid retro traditionalist.

SS not resonating to those under 50? Someones been playing with the special glue again.

The only people who have any issue with SS are those who put it on a higher pedistool than what it was to begin with..which is basically just a "sporty" package. Kinda likle the Toyota "S" Package....or Chevy did wth the Z names back in the day. SS and Chevy's go like apples and pie. They do seem to be trying to be more responsible with the name, so that should get some whiners to chill out. Personally I want the red bow ties back for performance.

I am down with the all out performance/track versions of the Camaro/Corvette having Z names.

I agree. Gold bowties on the new Camaros are an absolute eye sore.

I think they need to move in a new direction but that doesn't mean getting rid of SS necessarily. They should keep it on cars where there is a strong traditional association like the Camaro or Impala. Even though the Cobalt SS (especially the turbo model) was very good it just doesn't seem like SS is a good moniker for something that isn't really in a "muscle car" segment. Just as it would be ridiculous to make a Corvette SS (yes I realize the first SS was a Corvette but it was a racecar and is not well known).

I don't really think you need to have a unified performance moniker although it would be nice. I don't think that SS can become the Chevrolet M or AMG or SVT though. The Z designations would probably be better for that.

I'm actually very tired of GM's alphabet soup. It's meaningless to me these days.

I'd appreciate a very well-done appearance package without badging over something that's got an additional 3 badges and more alphabet soup, aka, "2LT RS" for the Camaro or "3LT Z71" for Colorado, etc. It's too much.

I think "SS" has been way overdone and capitalized. I'd much more appreciate an "SS" specific appearance package with no badging and being able to recognize the look and sound of the car. Give it its own color pallette, it's own wheel styling, and maybe a tweak or two.

Agreed. A gold bowtie 15-20 years ago was always indicative of a "base" Chevrolet. The uplevel models usually had a red one, ala a Monte SS, 454SS, Cavalier Z24, Celebrity Eurosport, Lumina Euro, etc.

I really miss the fact that the Camaro no longer has its own badge.

In early '06, before the Camaro was officially approved, the person who'd become it's VLE picked my brain for opinions on the Camaro.

One thing I told him was that I thought this: ...should take the place of the gold bowtie.

He told me to forget it, design was insistent on the gold bowtie.

^3rdgen emblem btw...

SS on this camaro is weak. it IS a trim package. you cant order a V8 camaro without getting an SS. , 4th gens were cool, you could get the base v8 or the SS "tuned" model.

3rdgens were even better, multiple engines with only 1 being king of the hill. and you dont even have to get a z28/iroc package for a v8 then!!

~~should have told him to forget even making the car if you knew backup sensors, gold bowties, and limited availabilty of white was gonan happen.

Wouldn't have mattered. I don't think anyone from GM ever listened to a damned word I ever told them.

Agreed.... and performance Chevys should sport the red bowtie... no question.

I'm not sure the Camaro badge would work on the new car - it would interfere with all that fresh air entering the engine through that awesome gunslit above the grille on the SS.
