Aftermarket also favors volume players. LS1 isn't exactly a high production engine compared to the Stang's 4.6. Need more perspective? There are more Chrysler 300s alone rolling around with Hemis than there are LS1 F & Y bodies. If YOU wanted to make money in the aftermarket, which engine would you put your resources and investment in?

The LS1 aftermarket, as far as engines go, it's pretty pityful IMHO. Sure, the aftermarket is better than it was before, but it's still nothing to be proud of by a long shot.
There are more LSX motors. All the internal parts from the Gen IIIs are interchangeable (6L, 4.8, 5.3, 5.7). So every V8 truck and SUV fall into that catagory as well as camaro, firebird, GTO, corvette, ssr. The Impala SS has the same casting # on the heads my Camaro SS has.The hemi isnt even close yet and may never be. Gen IV parts are 90% interchangeable.

Eh? Beg to differ.

What's a Hemi-fawning thread doing in this forum section, anyway? What's it got to do with 5gen and future... seems like a lounge topic to me.

BTW just so you DaimlerCX fans can keep it straight, here's the pecking order:

LS7 > 6L SRT Hemi > LS2 > Hemi ~= LS1 which preceded the Hemi by several years until DaimlerCX finally saw the light....

Just kidding. Your show sounds pretty cool. I think some of the appeal is gone from Woodward. It definitely doesn't do it for me like it used to. This year, the burnouts were extremely minimal. It really has gone from the cool cars driving and people on the side watching, to the cool cars fighting for and paying for good parking on the side and watching modern cars drive down Woodward. It's really flipped from what it was and should be.

Oh well.

I absolutely completely disagree with you on this. The LS1 aftermarket is pitiful? How many 4th gens out there do you know that have been modified. I personally know way more than just a few. How many Hemis have been modified. Honestly, how many Hemi owners care about modifing there cars? I would bet the number is extremely low. The Hemi aftermarket may turn around when there is a more affordable performance player available, aka Challenger, but until then I don't see it taking off. How many monster Hemis are you aware of? I know the engine is newer, but I am hard pressed to think of one that really impresses me. I am not even really impressed by the blown 480hp one mentioned in this thread. In this day and age, making 480hp out of a blown 5.7 engine it not something that astonishes me.
I still think the 4.6 aftermarket is poor. You don't have many choices in heads, and you end up paying and arm and a leg just for an intake manifold. 4v head swaps are expensive as hell, 3v componentry is still in its infancy, and serious power out of the 2v is hard to be had. The only exception to this is the newer Cobras, but how much of the Mustang population do the 03/04 Mustang make up?
One more thing. What do you refer to when you say Ford Cammer v8? Are you talking about the 415hp 5.0 DOHC Modular engine? I heard nothing of this engine back in 1995, which would be 10 years ago.

The article referred to had a Comp 224/228/114 cam in an otherwise internally stock hemi with headers and some tuning making 476 hp at 6500 rpm. No blower. Pretty nice numbers for a relatively mild cam in an otherwise stock motor IMO. When they get a better handle on tuning and have more aftermarket parts options available, these motors will be putting up some terrific numbers.

Ok, I think everyone knows how to compare stock HP an TQ numbers. The point is that the sell through rate of the hemi in the trucks and LX cars will quickly place them in the crosshairs of aftermarket companies in the near future. Especially "if" they do put out a pony car witht he hemi. Then you have the market numbers and the image thats needed for an explosion in parts.

Can't disagree on the number of LS1 F and Y bodies BUT you forgot that this is a family of engines. The LSx based V8s are in Thousands of trucks and will be in more cars with the advent of DOD and FWD applications. With the similarities between the first LS based motors and the Gen IVs I don't think the LS1 aftermarket is going to shrink. If anything it will only get larger. Can't leave a point like this out, Guy.

Yeah, I realized that after I posted this. Its not bad, but it is still not anything groundbreaking in my opinion. Perhaps the Hemi does need more time, but first they have to put it into a vehicle that is much more likely to be modified (Challenger.)

Grant you that via trucks, the volume of LSx engines is great, and that parts are interchangable. Also will agree that the aftermarket will grow as LS1s get older. However, sticking with strictly LS1s, and comparing them to say the 4.6 from Ford, or even the parts available from...gasp....Honda, LS1 parts are pretty slim by comparison.

Stop by Ford for their Ford Motorsports book. Then, go through one of the more than DOZEN Mustang and Ford magazines at the local Barnes & Noble. If you feel lucky, you can even take a headcount on how many modified Mustangs there are vs LS1s (beyond K&N filters and a trick exhaust).

Mustangs are made from the start to be mod-friendly, right down to Ford making the codes available to aftermarket manufacturers.

Arm and a leg for parts? LS1 parts aren't exactly 5.0 Mustang cheap either, sport.

Wanna compare personalization pieces? No contest. Don't pursue it.

The Hemi is still new, and has alot of potential. To say owners aren't intrested in hopping up their Hemis is akin to those people who pounced on me when I warned that the '03 blown Cobra would eat LS1s as a snack a few months before they came out (I witnessed the results myself).

I already see plenty of Hemi-Rams (Sports, Daytonas, and Rumble Bees) that are already sporting warranty friendly mods. The Charger is going to be the same way. Aftermarkets are going to be all over this like a cheap suit (assuming someone breaks more of the engine codes Chrysler seems loath to share).

But remember, no jerk in their right mind is going to spend money on a new car, and then void the warranty with alot of non factory parts unless they have bags of money to burn. Aftermarket parts for a new engine aren't going to appear till those engines start coming off warranty.

That's what you are seeing with the expanded LS1 aftermarket. But because LS1s are actually pretty small in production numbers, you won't see LS1 aftermarket parts in the quanity you are going to see Mustang 4.6s, or eventually the regular Hemis (which comes in a single version for all applications).

Re: Something hilairious last Saturday night....

I still disagree with you on most of your post about the availabilty of LS1 parts. You don't have to start with an LS1, you can start with an number of compatible blocks. I am sorry, but the LS1 aftermarket is still stronger than the 4.6s. LS1 parts are cheaper, they are more plentiful, and it is easier to make big power. The only thing the 4.6 might have on the LS1 in the aftermarket are superchargers; the 4.6 has no shortage of those available.
Until the Hemi is introduced in a car people care to modify, I still don't see that aftermarket taking off, especially with Mercedes constantly updating their electronic nannies to make it harder and harder to modify anything.

If I pick up a Ford performance catalog and take a look at it, I am positive most of it is going to be filled with 5.0L parts, as that aftermarket is still freakishly huge. I will openly admit that the Honda aftermarket is bigger than the LS1's too. I bet the Chevy 350 aftermarket is bigger than both the 5.0 and Honda aftermarkets, but I don't remember ever bringing them up. I believe I just stated that the LS1s aftermarket is more impressive than the Hemi's or the 4.6s. I don't know what the future holds, but I know for the time being I can build a full high powered LS1 engine for cheap, and it can be pieced together from whatever I want or need it to be in the GM parts catalog.

If the Hemi is going to be as diverse as the LS series of GM engines, it has alot of catching up to do.
