ok so toyota imports 45% of their vehicles and honda imports 24% of their vehicles

how much of that 45% is for lexus who's owners probably wouldn't notice an additional import tax? same question for honda's 24% import -- how many are acura?

Heh...

I guarantee that if you slap $7,000 on the sticker of ANYTHING due to a VAT, buyers are going to notice.

"Hey Japan, we're thinking of running a trillion dollar deficit for a few years, you know, just until the economy recovers and the baby boomers finally die off. Could we interest you in some T-Bills?"

Yeah, I don't think we're going to see any protectionist tariffs soon.

Give a reason to bring the jobs back here for a change.
And jobs (and the recirculation of the money involved) is what, in my opinion, will restore us to what we one were AND make us less vulnerable when the rest of the globe has problems.

go with the failed protectionist mentallity and the country tanks.

Tariffs are a failed and ignorant method of control. They don't work as designed and they certainly don't work in the USA.

It's based on the same mentallity that we can bring "jobs" back to the USA if we just would stop letting companies do that. Tax em, tariff everything, throw a temper tantrum.

It shows only a blind narrow view of economics and the world in general. What the USA has achieved and will continue to achieve has nothing to do with the socialist, communist, protectionist ideas.

I dunno, seems to be working alright for Japan, and the USA's economy and strength was built in an era where the 'world economy' idea didnt exist so much.

Japan and Korea don't quiet have our economy

Look at GDP. You can't sustain consistant growth with excessive government participation. The free market works, it has to be free though. Otherwise it's not a market, just a show.
