Well since Japan Inc already has their own wide spectrum tariff, artificially weak and manipulated Yen, there's no reason we shouldn't be fighting back. Many scream trade war. If we don't do something we won't have the means to do anything about it here before long as our jobs and wealth leave our country in droves.

The clearest example of Japan manipulating the Yen is it's substantial holding of foreign currency reserves, specifically the US dollars which it's buying and holding. In 2006 Japan had on hand $850 Billion USD's. This is absolutely obserd.

The recent economic downfall of the US has hurt Japan temporarily as the Yen is trading around 92 per the dollar. Make no mistake when this downturn is shed for a more favorable economic climate they'll be back in the drivers seat once again.

People are easy to criticize the domestics business model and cost structure. That's easy to do when Japan Inc gets to hide behind a currency that adds $2k to $18k to each car imported respectively depending on content.

You are wrong because you are cluttering up this thread with some devil's advocate nonsense - either state your opinion, or observe. The individual you are putting words into the mouth of is capable of stating his own opinion on what he meant (well... maybe...), and doesn't need you to do it for him.

I'm pretty sure I stated my opinion.

Are you going for some kind of record here? I've never seen anyone capable of saying nothing whatsoever of their own in this many posts. Either you have some amazing innate talent at saying nothing every time you type and hit 'Submit Reply', or you've practiced hard...

Yeah I know.

Can you beleive those bastards have been slapping them down on our automobile industry for all these years and we haven't responded???

It boggles my mind too!!!

Hell, your MB there should have got roughly $7,000 in VAT slapped on it right off the top. That's about what a Cadillac CTS gets in Germany...

Toyota imports roughly 45% (1.5 million vehicles) of total vehicle sales in the North American market.

Just a side point to this; Many people will bring up how Domestic brands build and import vehicles also. However, the reason for that is to compete with the foreign brands who exercise a cost advantage and the only way to attempt to equal it out since Washington won't step in is to buy foreign parts and build vehicles in foreign countries.

People will also bring up Domestic/Foreign content as a way to defend a foreign brand vehicle purchase. The higher the foreign content on a Domestic vehicle means that the Domestic brand had to go outside the US for parts so as to cut into or attempt to equal the cost advantage of the foreign competition.

Bottom line is the higher the foreign content and more vehicles built outside the US on vehicles purchased here is jobs and money being spent and supported elsewhere.

For Honda/Acura it's 76% being built in the USA. (Page 4 has the numbers.)
