Did you hear that Popular Hot Rodding says the Camaro will be back for 2007? I think it will be a great car!

Let me take things back a ways... back in 1989, I bought my 1989 Camaro RS 5.0... I didn't get an IROC-Z, not because I wasn't a "car guy" or was just in it for the image, but because it was the best I could do at the time.
Also, another big thing ot consider about the 70's time frame is that the 6.6 was a pretty good gas hog, wasn't it? This was right in the middle of the Gas Crisis... a big, thirsty big block might not have been managable for a lot of people.
I guess it boils down to this: Ya, I am sure there were a lot of folks who bought the non-6.6 T/A as image cars, but to say MOST of them did... well, I think that is a real reach...

There wasn't a very large price difference between the base TAs and the high performance versions. There was simply alot of people who wanted the 'looks' of the car more than they cared about the performance. Then they turned around and loaded them up with everything. A generalization, of course, but still a pretty accurate comparison.

I still think it's 2007 as a 2008, but if contracts are already going out.....

It would be like you getting an IROC...with the base LG4, base 15" wheels, rear drums...and loading it with options. So this loaded "milktoast" IROC would cost about as much as a G92 LB9/L98 IROC, but be as slow (or slower) than your 305 RS.

I think Hunkins is a great guy. Very open-minded and a "car-guy" in general. I see his passion in his words frequently.
I want to step up and say that a bunch of hard-nosed guys here on this site gave Hunkins more than a hard time about 2 years ago when he started posting trial data for the (new and unreleased at that time) '03 Cobra. I think he was accused of everything from faking the data to being paid off by Ford. The coup-de-gras was when Johnny said for an acceleration comparison, the '03 Cobra would give the Z06 a good run for the money... oh geez did he get ripped over that comment. Well IMO, he basically got tired of the accusations and uneducated attacks because he was simply reporting what he was seeing and doing. As a result, his post count on this board basically died. I imagine he still reads here.
He has written about all kinds of cars and musclecars in his career, and he is an accomplished photographer too IMO.
As for him "jumping ship"... I don't think that's a fair statement, because he has made his living covering all kinds of cars. He is justified in moving around some, given his job at the time.
Maybe you refering to This Article that ran in MM&FF last year? He has also done some writing for other covers. This one is from Steeda's own website.
Anyways, nice to see him following the Camaro story!

My comment was meant to be "light hearted" based on that.

OK, I see it perhaps a little better now... I'll give credit to Z284ever, and Guy...
Kind of made it a bit clearer.
Still, I don't knwo that I'd swipe a huge stereotype across "most" of the non-6.6 buyers... but I do see you points a bit better now.
PS: Apologies on the big block statement... rather embarassing.

Yea, like HE said!
I do recall the T/A getting the same mileage as 350 Camaros of the time.
Yep, there's no Pontiac "big" block. The engine is the same dimensions, regardless as to if you had a 301, 350, 400, or 455 cubic inches.

6 months to design.
12 months to tool and validate.
PPAP 6 months prior to SORP.
Unless MFD found religion in the last year and I don't know about it, normal body sheetmetal tooling is still 52 weeks.
Unless you want compressed timing from MFD...
Which means they'll charge twice as much shorten it all the way down to 52 weeks.

It's all good!
I just thought a few of the newer posters in this forum (we have lots of those lately) might want to know why the comment about Hunkins not being here was made - nothing more.
No fingers pointed or names named... It's all good.
I wouldn't mind Johnny making the scene again though...
It's always nice to have fresh perspectives IMO.
BTW - nice run through the T/A history guys... I've learned a lot!
And Darth, the late '70's were a time "out of time". Looks were EVERYTHING then... Elton in platforms, Bowie dressed like a girl, Travolta in 747 collars, polyester bell bottoms, white vinyl shoes with rubber soles, 'fros, perms, and of course cars with stickers (and typically gaudy colors to boot). Maybe it was fall out from the drug use of the '60's?!?!
All car makers were into the stickers then... T/A, Z/28, King Cobra, Monza, and several other cars. I'm more adept at Fords so I'll tell you the MPG and Stallion packages were available for Pintos, Mavericks and Mustangs for starters - purely a glamour kit, but they sold like crazy. King Cobra was a $1277 option on the Mustang that was only a $3k car to start with!!!
Check out some of these vintage links for impressions!

It's all about looks, not how fast you were back then.
Yup, ya just had to be there pimpin' yo stuff to "get it".
