Ontario considering blocking Kia, Hyundai sales?
Canada banning Hyundai is kind of like the US banning GM. It does not make economic sense and is purely a political ploy. Chances are if you buy a Hyundai (Sonata and Santa Fe most popular models) you have a car made in Alabama with some parts from Korea and China. On the other hand, GM makes its cars in Canada, Mexico, Australia ... the US with parts from all over the world also. So saying "I only buy America" or "I only buy Canadian" is a bit short sighted in this global marketplace.

I think we should expect all imported goods and vehicles to pass ALL of our tough; health, crash, safety requirements, the same as everything made here.
Then tariff them to match how our products are taxed on their shores.
I remember seeing something about nearly $35K Ford Taurus' in Japan...yet Honda's were selling here at a near loss.

"We" GM does not get a free ride into China. We have to partner with a Chinese company to begin to think about selling a vehicle in China.
Plus, the vehicle must be assembled in China. Shanghai is our partner in China.
I'd rather we don't pull out of China, as they are the only thing keeping GM #1 and vehicles sold there are CASH COWS.

Hey Cool!! I hope they go through with it. Somebody finally found the nadz to stand up and say "Look, this isn't right."
I only wish somebody 'important' would do that here...kick them right below the belt - "Look, you want us to buy your cars? Then buy ours. Otherwise you can shove it!"

I'm going to shut up now.
The only problem is we don't tax imported toyotas the way they tax our exports to Japan. ( I actually have no knowledge of how our exports would be taxed in Japan and I really don't know that much about how cars imported from Japan to here are taxed so I really probably shouldn't be arguing these points. I'm working purely off of assumptions and that is always a bad idea)
I'm going to shut up now.

There's a high degree of nationalism in the asian-pacific countries, and that is the main reason why our products don't do well over there. It doesn't help that our own popular media sing praises for the asian-produced vehicles while at the same time criticizing the domestic made vehicle out of pure habit. I've driven foreign and domestic cars and truly, I fail to see much difference in quality.
What we need to do is re-introduce some nationalistic pride into our own population, starting with schools and popular media.

But hey, all the pro-import guys claim "free-market" right?
