GM is once again trying to trim its 14,118 dealerships

Down about 7% from 15,094 in 2005, GM is trying to consolidate its franchises. Wagoner said the automaker wants to combine GMC, Buick and Pontiac stores into a single dealership that would sell all three brands.
In my travels hauling cars interstate, I see quite a few GM dealerships in the country along 2 lane roads and I wonder how they can make any money.

All of the GM dealerships around here that I can think of either sell only Chevrolet, only Cadillac, only Saab or they sell Buick, GMC, and Pontiac all in one... so the 3 in 1 thing is already going on here for those brands. Though I really think that Saab and Caddy dealers should be combined.

The only way they can make more profit that way is to raise prices on us.

My local GM dealer has Pontiac, Buick, GMC, and Chevrolet across the street [same dealer]. There's a HUGE GM dealer in Monroeville, PA [outside of Pittsburgh] that sells Pontiac, GMC, Buick, Cadillac, Hummer, Saturn, and Saab.

They are gunna try to do more mega dealers in metro areas. I think thats a bad idea.
Caddy dealers need to refresh thier image and design. Hummer dearlers need to have focus. PBG people need to know thier niche customers. Saturn is good where it is, Chevy needs to be a great round about place, and Saab needs to sell something!!

Some Oldsmobile dealers sued GM for millions when they axed Olds, so now they have to be careful while thinning out the dealership ranks. I've seen some small town dealerships that look like they havent put any money into the place in 30 years.

Right, some of those Chevy dealers need to go. The ones with old, dirty wood paneling, stained carpet.....parts department out the door and around the back....etc.

Just one of those places can ruin a whole brand image
