The Pontiac G8 ST is Coming to the New York Auto Show

Start packing the car truck, we're leaving today - to grab a front row seat at the New York Auto Show for General Motors’ press conference.

Very reliable sources have told PickupTruck.com that the production Pontiac G8 ST (Sport Truck), based on Holden's VE Ute, will bow in the Big Apple in late March during the NY Auto Show’s media days. WO0t!

The decision to move forward with the G8 ST was made even though there are still lingering concerns inside GM about the exchange rate between the Australian and U.S. dollars. If the U.S. dollar had continued to weaken against the Aussie buck recently, the price for the imported Ute would have been too high for the market.

This news follows GoAuto.com’s Lutzian scoop last week that a four-door GMC-badged ‘Crewman’ Ute concept would also appear at the NY Auto Show. Now, other online sources are reporting that the GMC pickup concept will instead appear at the Chicago Auto Show early next month. We’ll keep our pens sheathed on that point. There’s an embargo, dontcha know.

Last year our sources also gave us the official name of the Pontiac G8 ST and news that only a 361-hp V8 would be offered, starting at $31,000 USD. The name remains the same but a lower-priced 256-hp V6 version of the ST will also be available.

Here’s why.

The recently cancelled Pontiac G8 version of Holden's VE Sportwagon was only going to be available with a V6 for CAFE reasons, to offset the G8 ST’s V8 fuel economy rating. But with the wagon gone, the Ute will have to average out CAFE on its own. Hence, the V6 has been added. Good news for G8 ST owners looking for a cheaper Ute to park in their driveways.
Yes...... there IS a God!

That should boost GMs Truck CAFE average. Very cool but I think I'm more excited to see that GMC Crewman. Its great to see Pontiac getting more unique product.

i think its great the G8 ST is coming... i'm still confused as to why the G8 sportwagon will not be.. i'd think it'd sell at least as many as the G8 ST... yeah wagons dont sell great numbers, and i dont think the G8 ST will either... but they dont have to because really, how much money are they spending on these guys .. they were engineered to comply with US safety regulations.. they are already making the front clip which has been tested, etc, for the G8 sedan..... just put the front end on a wagon and replace some of those sedans with wagons..

just confused as to why the ST is coming and not the wagon... why not both?

The Magnums dismal sales and cancelation told gm not to bother with the G8 SW. RWD eats space in a wagon anyways. I think the GM product would be alot better than the mopar but maybe now they will import at more fuel efficient and roomier epsilion station wagon.

This is a boon for GM truck cafe. I personally dont care for the ST but there is some pent up frustration among a few of you. Is it any lighter than the sedan and will they offer a AWD version? I can picture a slightly lifted ST on 31's.

Hmmm...Maybe I'll get one of those (preferably a crew cab model) to replace my Colorado in a 4 or 5 years.

I'm thinking this thing would make a lot more sense with a Chevy badge on it, unless they are afraid of the El Camino comparisons....

Not my cup of tea, but I am glad they are giving something else with V8 power to Pontiac.

Depends on the price and my post-college income.

Outlook is favorable.

Doesnt lend itself well to the Pontiac look, IMO.

Should be a Chevy. Period.

With 400 hp and a manual trans, I would have bought the wagon. I don't have any interest in this.
