Thumbs down NOOOOOOOO! Toyota to buy GM!!!

Well not really, sorry for the scare. The rumor is that Toyota might be eyeballing buying a stake in faultering GM to boost them to #1 in auto sales in the US. I hope they dont and it just stays a rumor.

Hmmm... I doubt it would ever happen. Sounds like the author just is fantasizing what it would be like if it did happen.

A new Z28 with GM powertrain and Toyota build quality would be neat though.

Oh, and I got the Lancer (that's the B-1B, people). Works good, for the most part. Having some issues getting the gauges and effects working.

US Workers demanding so much from companies is ultimately destroying the lives of both.

Detroit's managers and experienced Wall Street hands know why Toyota, with all its financial clout and credibility, will never acquire GM: The U.S. company is laden with poison pills, in the form of massive health-care and pension liabilities, plus a grossly noncompetitive labor contract with the United Auto Workers union. Honda will not touch Ford for the same reasons

What would Toyota have to benefit from making GM #1?

Toyota will be the number 1 automaker in the US very soon, without buying GM. They have already surpassed Ford, and they're not far behind GM. If that's the goal, they don't need to buy GM to pull it off.

Bah. I love smart people.

GM has more enterprise value than Toyota, I don't see a smaller company buying a bigger one.

GM isn't CH11

You know, it's funny how Japanese companies clean out management jobs when their companies aren't profitable, and we clean out the hourly people...could they see something we don't???

How many Japanese companies have you worked for so that you've seen this firsthand?

GM is in a fat trimming stage, so to speak. I'm betting the Japanese have just a bit less fat in their ranks, particularly on the "hourly" / manufacturing side of things. And by the way, GM is planning to reduce its salaried force by 7% this year, so it isn't just the hourly folks. Oh, and with the salaried people, they get told they are done. Thankfully it is in a humane and decent manner, with a solid severance package - 1 month's pay for every year of service, continued benefits during that time, job placement assistance, use of the company for up to 30 days if they had one. But they are still told they are being let go, and that is it. On the hourly side, they have to ASK them if they want to quit while dangling a payout in front of them. Interesting difference.
